CATTARAUGUS factory still stands

Post by cattaraugus57 »

On Saturday I was up in Little Valley,NY to see the old Catt factory while it still stands.
It's pretty much like some pictures I had seen a few years ago, looks a little worse and the weeds are high.
EPA or super fund equipment in the rear with a fence around the back.
Kind of eeire and it's a shame to realise before too long it like many others will be history.
nice to see it anyway and meant a lot to me.
Also went by the orig Case family home where the orig factory was in the rear and of couse it's for sale still.
Went to the American museum of Cutlery in Cattaraugus as well and found out that the Old JBF Champlin barn/workshop was located/bought/disassembled and moved with plans to be reassembled in the future.
Met a fellow who invited my wife and I to his home to look at some Rare Case knives (and others)..anyone ever see and hold a $12,000 5 blade Sowbelly?!
Long trip(5.5 hrs) but rich in cutlery history and fun!

I believe the majority of them could be,but if not started soon they will be a total loss and that would be a real shame.
It would of course take a huge amount of money to pull it off
I think the only reason some kid or scarpper hasn't set fire to it is,it's such
a small area where everybody knows everybody and they'd get found out
very quickly.
It Phila,pa camden,nj there have been 3 or 4 huge old warehouse/factory fires in the last month or so.
The fires have been mostly Attributed to scrappers cutting steel out to sell.

It's kind of neat ..where the sign is painted on the side of the main building you can see where it was repainted and it wasn't in exactly the same spot.
It's more clear in the pictures than in person.
Just makes me wonder what year it was redone.

They're asking $130KUSD.

House is a lot bigger than it looks in that pic.

They're trying to sell it for over twice what it is on the tax rolls for. SO if it works up there like it does down here, if you paid close to the asking price, the taxable value would increase a BUNCH!

Haunted? The more the merrier!! ::ds::

Neat looking old house. I could dig it if it wasn't WAY the heck up there in the cold country where everybody talks funny. ;)

You know I saw a house close to there for $46,000 and it's tempting.
Although I wonder how much the taxes would be.
There isn't much work around there and it did snow like 112" last year.
Met some nice folks..
My old house was haunted so it wouldn't bother me...if "they" were nice!
That house is always for sale so you'd have to wonder how friendly the spirits are
I can't believe the Case family would sell it for one and why the Case co doesn't buy it even for the historical value.
But then Case is owned by Zippo now so...

Wow, compared to house prices in Oregon that is a real bargain! ::drool::
3,000 sq ft, 2.5 baths & 3 bedrooms on 2.45 acres for only $130,000!
Even the depressed housing market in Oregon it would be twice that unless it was in a big city, then the sky is the limit! ::dang::

Like was said, there isn't much happening in that part of the world. It appears to be a grand old house with a history that would appeal only to a very limited number of potential buyers.

3K sq ft in this part of the world even if built in 1909 ( or 1919, I've slept a bit since I looked at the ad) would bring a half mil or better if situated in a decent neighborhood and probably a mil if situated in a "good" neighborhood near one of the fashionable older country club areas here in Ft Worth.

And to quote the old real estate adage, "location is everything".

That's peanuts compared to what the crappy little houses over here sell for. I'd be on it like ugly on ape.

Immigrate!!

Come over and stay illegally. Sign up for the "dole" and live happily. When they catch up with you, tell them you've voted a straight Democratic ticket in the last 5 elections. They'll probably pay off anything you owe on the house. ::woot::

Works for other illegals. ;)

LOL, Don't tell 'em. ;)

I've got a good friend over here that is American. His mother was English and married for a bit to an Air Force guy. They divorced and she went home. He was raised in Liverpool from a baby until he was old enough to join the USN. He did 4 as corpsman and got out. He sounds as English as a native. He married an English girl that divorced her American hubby.

He's a hoot.
