Description From Seller: Cattaraugus 22299 pocketknife. Cattaraugus was one of the finer U.S. brands during America's golden age. Along with Case, Remington, Winchester, and many others, they crafted knives that would rival the quality of knives made anywhere in the world. Cattaraugus was founded in the late 1880's by four of the Case brothers as they joined the business their brother-in-law had started. This is a classic example of their fine knives. It has seen heavy use and has a great look to it. The knife has not been cleaned or buffed and remains original.

The knife was beautifully crafted and fully representative of the fine quality and craftsmanship that top American brands of this era were known for. The carbon steel blades were deeply swedged and display crisp, sharp lines. The blades are free of any serious corrosion or pitting with just some scattered light surface corrosion as shown. Blade travel is smooth over the entire arc for both blades and the blades have a bit of side play in the open position. The carbon steel spring is free of problems, although the blades do not snap closed. A cleaning would likely improve this issue, as there's quite a bit of dust/pocket lint on the inside. The nickel silver bolsters are free of any dings, dents, marring or damage. The handle appears to be of well worn stag. The scales remain tightly pinned and they're silky smooth. There's a tight hairline at the end pin on the reverse side as shown. The scales are otherwise free of cracks and show just one small chip at the top end above the shield. The sheild remains tightly secured and free of damage. The knife measures 2-7/8" closed and 6-5/8" fully opened (from tip to tip).

Questions: What age would you set this knife at ? I know it looks old but as I have learned, that is not always so. Do you feel that $66.50 was too much to pay for it ? I wanted at least one vintage Cattaraugus for my collection. I have seen them sell for a great deal of money in the past few weeks. Not sure what the tang making says, I can read the number from the images provided. You have to admit it sure has a lot of character..:+)

As far as age, it is hard to pin down Cattaraugus knives to any exact degree, but a range would be 1890 to 1940. Cattaraugus made very few pocket knives after WWII and those based on what I have seen had composition handles.

As to the price, all I can say is that other sellers have much better luck than I do. Not to knock the knife but it does have a lot of honest wear. If I put that knife out on Ebay it would go for $20 maximum.

I agree with Steve's assesment 100%. Used Cat's just aren't bringing much money. Many of them were parts knives after 1963 closing of the plant. Not that this is, but it is WELL worn. Even a CASE XX in that condition would only bring similar money. JMO

I have not held the knife in my hands yet, but you know me be now by what I buy, I like things old and used as far as these types of knives go. My collection of Silver Fruit Knifes is a different story, they I like old and barely used from the 1800s.

I guess I'm a shade different then most. I'm a history buff and the more used it was back in the day, kind of makes me wonder, "who" wore down this knife, Is he or she still with us ? My house is full of old things (that my wife, without saying to me, probably hates it all..LOL).

Cattaraugus 2 Blade Pocket Knife Wood Handle

I pick up another "Cattaraugus", this one was only $12.99.

Description: Cattaraugus 2 blade folding knife. It measures 3 1/4" closed, one blade is 2 5/16" and the other is 1 13/16". The smaller blade is stamped Cattaraugus Cutlery, Little Valley NY. Both blades blade have good snap and half stop. The longer blade when opened all the way has side wobble, but not at the half stop. There are no numbers stamped on the blades.
