Few weeks ago a gentleman in The Netherlands sent me a Queen Gunstock to engrave - Not high dollar engraving or a high end custom knife but it turned out very attractive - I shipped it back to him a couple of weeks ago - This morning I got a note from him telling me he loved the knife but it would be the last one he will be able to send me - He had to pay over 40 bucks duty when the knife got back to him - The guy bought the knife - had shipping cost to me - engraving cost - return shipping & then the guy gets stuck for 40 more bucks duty! yup. happened to me all time, I always pay 30% tax duty of everything I bought from US that valued over $50. than one time I send a custom knife for repair, I paid $30 for shipping and another $30 for return shipping. when it arrived, I had to pay 30% tax duty again ( I pay 30% the first time I bought this knife).

a shame about the duty charge, i had this recently and have never had it before, its sad that good folk pay for the postage and then more payment gets added, its funny highway men got prison for daylight robbery many years ago but we have it done to us most days but they call it a legal charge sorry rant over

i shipped some bodark to canada 6 months or more back. wanted to do a great knifemaker a favor. post office said all out country ships were sent priority so the package cost 45.00. my priorities are low so i could afford it but what a rip.---HiPower

I'd be interested to hear from one of the guys in Australia on this subject. I probably send more knives there than any other country outside the USA.

wait till you hear bout this...
any kind of shipment (express, priority, etc) by USPS to my country took exactly 2 weeks to arrived at customs.
shipment valued up to $50 get checked, and delivered by our postal office the next day to the shipping address. we pay max. $10 duty charge (some times we just pay for the re-shipping & re-handling service for $1)
if the shipment valued over $50, than customs would hold it for another week, we pay %30 of the goods marked value (that would be the price of the goods + shipping cost , so if I bought a knife for $100 and I use USPS express for let say $30, than my duty charge is %30 from $130 ). and the best part is, I have to go to the post office my self, in office hour. they are closed at 3 in the afternoon btw.

well, sometimes....a knife just worth the damn trouble

I used to have my engines for my hot rod built by a guy who used to live in Canada.
He had to pay like $2500 on each engine shipped to him from the US.
Since The majority of his work was from the USA,it got real expensive and finally he moved here.
Figure even 10 engines=$25,000!

I am going to take the other side on this one. How many more jobs would stay in the US if this applied here. We would not be as willing to import merchandise from China, Pakistan, Taiwan if we had to pay a big tax on it.

Would auto makers and others move as many jobs outside of the US if they paid an extra duty on top.

Would the extra taxes wash out the savings of cheaper labor?

Just something to think about.

How many of the company’s that move out of the US were non-union company’s - Hmmmmmmmm just something to think about - Mr. O doesn't want Boeing to open a plant in SC - Hmmmmmmmmmmmm - Here in California we have 10 million - never mind -
