what do ya'll look like?

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Jerry-
I saw the hardback tent in the background.
I can still smell what it smelled like inside that thing.

And leaked like a sieve until we got them roofed with corrugated. Ours didn't smell so bad. We had showers on the mountain.

Did you know they have a name for the hard-backs? They're called SEA Huts (Southeast Asia Huts). I didn't know that until just the last couple of years. I wonder when that came into being. Certainly after Viet Nam but when after?

Jerry, that's a great picture. Thanks for posting it, and more importantly thanks for serving. Good on ya.
I lived in a tent in Nam, but ours had screens or mosquito netting I think. When I got out of V.N. & the Army at the same time I left it all as far behind me as I could. Tried to forget as much as I could. Not so much from bad experiences. Not too much of that. Just bieng in the Army, and worse yet, being in Viet Nam. I wasn't cut out for such things. Had bad dreams till I was in my early 40s. I took counsiling and screamed my bloody ass off at the poor counselor for a few months. The dreams stopped, praise be. I am a patriotic man today. Enough. Thanks again.

I salute all you gentleman that served.
I was of that same era and had to make the decision of college or Nam. No one else in my family had ever gone to college.
I chose college.
Now you have to understand I bleed Red, White and Blue. To this day I have regrets that I never took the chance to serve this Country in the Service.
Thanks again to those past and present who have.

We had the canvas sieve roof on ours.

One advantage to the hardbacks is they were a foot or so off the ground so the cobras were a bit more likely to stay outside. The biggest advantage was that the water ran under the tent instead of through it. We had some tents that were pitched on the ground without the plywood platform or the 2 X 4 frame, those poor guys had to tie a rope to a tree and run the rope through the tent and tie it to the cots, lockers, etc; everything in the tent was tied to the rope so the rain didn't wash it out every time it rained.

I never heard them called SEA huts.
Where did this come from? I don't see this post anywhere except in this quote. Did I miss something?

I had never heard them called SEA Huts either. I found that reference one day a few years ago while wandering the web. I found the following description someplace. Sorry, I don't remember where.

"When the 16- by 32-foot wood-frame tent is modified with a metal roof, extended rafters, and screened-in areas, it is called a Southeast Asia (SEA) hut. An example of the completed product is shown in figure 9-21. The SEA hut was originally developed in Vietnam for use in tropical areas by U.S. troops for berthing; but, it can readily be adapted for any use in any situation. It is also known as a strong-back because of the roof and sidewall materials."

Joe-
I can certainly relate to that. A VA Vet Center counselor named Ed Shaw helped me through that. Later I went to work with Ed at the Vet Center for about 4 years. Vet Centers were a Godsend to many veterans, but some Vet Centers were not nearly as good.

Thanks for your service brother!

Paul, I salute you for being a patriotic, educated citizen. We need lots of folks like that. Thanks

Dale, I don't think people take mental health seriously enough. The subject is often the butt of jokes.
My counseling was not through the V.A. Counseling/talk therapy can be extreamly benificial. I highly recomend it.
Also, thank you very much for your kind words. I really appreciate your response.

The TeamHouse at Special Forces Camp A-341, Bu Dop, was five feet underground. The camp had been over-run by the NVA twice, in 1963 and again in 1967. When they rebuilt the second time, they just dug a big hole, built the TeamHouse, then covered the whole thing with layers of PSP and sandbags and topped it off with a foot of concrete. There were, of course, air vents.

The site was on a knoll, but during the rainy season, this is what happened. My bunk was just to the left of that foremost 35 gallon garbage can.

For a minute there I thought you were dying the floors like we did state-side. Looks like the right color.

Yeah, TJ. Muddy Water. You're right. We had that color linoleum on the barracks floor at Ft. Campbell in 1967.

That water is about eight inches deep.

The old wooden barracks at Ft. Hood had concrete floors and they were stripped, re-dyed and buffed at least once a week. Any thing to keep us busy!! Seems I had red dye in my boots till the day I threw them away.

johnnierotten,

Not close to Evansville at all. I'm up in Valparaiso, a 15 minute drive south of Lake Michigan. Evansville is about 280 miles south of me all the way at the bottom of the State. I've been through there a few times on my travels but never spent any length of time there.
