Hay folks, I'm in need of an odd ball screw to attach a scope/dot-sight mount to an old Savage .22 rifle.
It's got a 1/4" x 32 tpi hole in the top of the barrel where the rear sight mounts. The screw that held the sight on is too short to bolt on the rail I made.
Unfortunately, no one in town can even order one for me! Can't even find one on the net!!!
It needs to be 1/4-32 x 3/8'' long minimum.

In a similar situation, I searched for months and bought a couple of screws that should have fit but didn't (thread angles were different). I finally coated the original screw with Stud and Bearing grade Locktite, seated the screw snuggly, and dressed it down flush with the top of the barrel. Then I drilled and tapped it to a modern standard scope screw (probably 8x40). Took about 15 minutes.

Look in your phone book for your local machine shop. I work at one, and with any computer controlled machine I know we can make any size, shape, type, etc of screw with any kind of threads. It may cost you twenty bucks for one screw, but if you can't get it anywhere else, this may be the best route. The twenty dollars is not all that unfounded though, as someone will have to find the parameters for the screw you need, get the material to make it, and spend about 20-30 minutes programming and running a machine to make you a custom screw, however you need it.
If you give your local machine shop a call, and possibly supply them with a screw to go off of, I'm sure they would do it for you. Personally, I work at a machine shop that makes ATV racing parts, but we often do orders for local companies with special jobs, or even one off jobs for one particular person. Since you seem to know exactly what you need, the machinist's handbook should have the parameters for it, and a local shop should be able to easily do the job for you
