Finger Saver????

Hi all, Probably not the smartest or the flashest on the block but here's my new belt sander.
Just couldn't afford to lose any more skin off the fingers.
Could only afford one from the local hardware store but should be a big improvement on hand sanding.
Haven't set it up properly yet, just had to plug her in and try it.
Had some horn off an old bull, got years ago so tried that for a trial run,, goes good.
Will have to tackle that barlow and smarten it up some.

here's the horn knob I cut them handles out of, still gotta do the old hacksaw trick on them.

And the rough sanded handles.

Took about 5 minutes to sand them down rough instead of hours. phew!!!!

It'll make a bludger out of me.

Nice. I could never get along without my band saw and belt sanders. BTW If you don't get a dust collector at least get some good hepa masks and watch your fingers too - - that alum oxide will take your pinkies down pretty quick

That sander is good enough for your needs.
Mine is just a 24 X 1 inch belt / 8 inch disk combo that is stationary and doesn't swivel like yours. It's all I need.
Your still always going to have to hand sand the finish work but that sander will help you greatly with all your heavy shaping .
It will be the most busy tool you have.
Be careful though and practice on some scraps first.
Those sanders can grind material down to nothing in no time.
Be gentle till you get the feel for it.
Keep posting your work.

Put a DC motor and motor controller on your sanders.

You can run 'em fast, slow, anywhere in between or even backwards.

They're the berries.

Good idea, have to keep an eye out for one.
Definitely needs something like that.

Just glad I've got a sander at the moment, makes you feel like tackling a job.

JW. Been doing a bit of practice.

Used to the smell of burning horn and hide, just gotta remember not to breathe at the wrong time.

Gary,
Good dust masks and even a respirator is a must if you do much sanding.
Bone dust is not good in your lungs. Micarta, G-10 (resin and fiberglass), any stabilized material, and a lot of materials are very dangerous to inhale, some can even be poisonous.
Even some woods can bring on extreme allergic reactions in some people.

I have a shop-vac I use for dust collection and keep down the dust in the shop.
No use breathing that stuff.

Dale,, Was just kidding about not breathing, the smell doesn't worry me.

I do use dust masks as I already have lung problems.
Pity we werent aware of these hazards 40 years ago.

You can't without a controller. The DC controller converts it. I used to work for Danfoss Electronics (the old Hampton Products before Bryan Hampton sold out to the Danes). Our products were AC and DC, constant speed, constant torque electronic motor controls. Danfoss bought Hampton Products to get a foot in the door in the DC business and now they've sold the DC end and only make AC controllers.

Yeah, yeah, I know. More than you needed to or ever wanted to know.
