ANTIQUE "AMERICAN KNIFE CO PLYMOUTH" WOODEN HAND(Civil War?)

Post by Draac »

I won this knife on Ebay last nighht for $35.52. I have not had time yet to research this comapny the "AMERICAN KNIFE CO. PLYMOUTH" (I'm hoping it's from Plymouth Massachusetts), I live in Boston and that would be cool to me.

Description: ANTIQUE CIVIL WAR ERA AMERICAN KNIFE CO PLYMOUTH WOODEN HANDLE POCKET KNIFE. This very old pocket knife was made by the American Knife Company in Plymouth sometime between 1849-1875. The handle is wood, and the knife blade is in really great shape for being over 150+ years old. There is no rust on the blade, and it appears to have been well taken care of. The wooden handle is smooth from years of being carried in someone's pocket. There are some indentations and a small split on the wooden handle, but they look like they are original or have been there a very long time. Either way, they certainly add a lot of character to this wonderful piece of the past. Who knows whether it belonged to some soldier fighting in the Civil War? It is stamped on the blade "AMERICAN KNIFE CO. PLYMOUTH", and measures 6-3/8 inches long opened up, and 3-3/4 inches long closed.

A quick research has taught me that it is not "Plymouth Mass". it's "Plymouth Hollow Conn"
and if marked "American Knife Co., Plymouth". The town of Plymouth Hollow changed it's name to Thomaston, CT in 1875 or so.

Also, I clipped this from an online book:

Well at least with that information I can conclude that the knife was made before 1875. That's a plus !!

Cool knives. ::nod:: That lockback is TERRIFIC. I just thought I would add my little quill. It's  that the ivory is tipped off at the end.

These American Knives from Plymouth are worth viewing. They are old and there can't be too many out there.

I picked up another knife from American Knife Co. Plymouth

Description: American Knife Co. pocket knife made in Plymouth. Old knife not in the best shape but for over 125 years old I guess it's not bad. This company made knives from 1849 until 1875. Brass handles with dents, staining, and scratches. Single blade stamped American Knife Co. Plymouth. Blade has good snap. Has been sharpened and used. Has a lot of pitting on back of blade and a few dark spots on front. 2 3/4" long closed.

It in rough shape but they getting harder to find, I got it for a fair price, so I'm happy with it.

If you think the knives are hard to find, try finding an old box that the knives came in ::nod::
