W. R. Case & Sons, Boy Scouts knife 6445 with no R
I have a very early W. R. Case & Sons, Tested XX 6445 on main blade, and Case XX Tested in circle on awl. The plate on the side says "Boy Scouts". I read a similar discussion from these archives from 2006, but it was determined by all in the conversation that Case did not make a 6445 with no R. I looked at many 6445R, and this is not the configuration. I looked at a photo of 14 Case boards in a museum online, and on the early knife board was this blade configuration. Can someone help me out with the history on this knife?

combolox , I've got a half dozen Case 6445R's none earlier than Tested XX era 20'-40'. I do know that many different blade configurations were offered. Picture might help a lot. I do know that there are some really knowledgable Scout collectors on this forum that will probably have more than I can offer

Dos your knife have a bail? Was it made without one? Some of the older knives will not have all of the letters after the pattern number stamp.combolox wrote:I have a very early W. R. Where did you see these knife boards on line?

I will take some photos tomorrow. This knife does have a bail on it. The knife boards I referred to were at ftmyersknifeclub.mgmikutis.com/knives/album/caseknca.html Thanks for all your help.

There is my little CASE BRADFORD tooth pick in the EARLY CASE picture lower left. Only the second one I have seen.

Assuming that its genuine which it appears to be, it was a knife that another company made on contract for Case. Possibly Utica, possibly someone else. Does look like an exceptional specimen.

Thanks Guys! I would sure like to find out more about the knife, but that may never happen. How would one go about putting a value on a knife such as this with nothing to compare it to?

Re: W. R. Case & Sons, Boy Scouts knife 6445 with no R
I agree with Steve,,It might be a Case knife,,but I doubt if Case made her.
It just doesnt look like a Case knife too me at all.
I just looked at the Bradford Tadpole you have listed,,did you buy the knives from the same seller? Because the Tadpole looks strange.
Stamps look altered and simply stamped wrong on the reverse,,they have xx twice,,which doesnt happen (or atleast i've never seen it) and it should prob be green bone,,not the newer looking Case jigged bone thats it has. Bone could be right,,because thats a Bradford shield,,but it just looks wrong too me.

Re: W. R. Case & Sons, Boy Scouts knife 6445 with no R
I own a 64055 with the markings almost identical to the markings on the Scout knife in this thread. It also has the "Made in U.S.A." under the Case stamping as this knife does. Witcher, in his book on Counterfeit Knives says that this stamp is believed to have been used on contract knives. In the case of my own knife, this definitely seems to have been the case. The bone and the shield do not appear to be "normal" Case manufacture items. From what I can see the tadpole also seems to be authentic.

I always thought "R" = bail?
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Re: W. R. Case & Sons, Boy Scouts knife 6445 with no R
Please read the other discussion "Early Case 6229 1/2, XX Tested". Elvis put this in about the double XX stamping.
"1905 to 1920 is the date range listed in Knifeaholic's book for that tang stamp and it's also mentioned that knives were produced with both iron and brass liners during that period. I've had knives with the "Tested" tang stamp that had the XX stamp over the model number just like this one. There are so few left, it's just not something you see much anymore. Great old knife!"
Also please look at the discussion "To Clean or Not To Clean?...This Is The Question". There is a more in depth discussion about the scales & tang stamp on the Tadpole. Here is the quote from Troyl2:
"i know blister i wouldnt have thought of that as traditional rogers jigging either but if you have sargents 6th page 130 the scales match what he has, probably the worst picture in book cant see tangs or anything but basic layout of knife i dont know the history of rogers bone but maybe a hundred years ago they where still searching for there own style, it would have been tuff to come up with a high end jigging style back then because everyone had some great jigging patterns"
J5109 listed a photo under that with an incredible grouping of early knives, and it has the actual photo of the knife from page 130, and not only does it have the same scales, it is stamped the same as mine.
In that discussion there is also mention about similar Case marked knives that were made by other companies such as the Scout.
Both of these knives were purchased from a Woman who bought them out of an Estate of an Elderly Man (96 I believe she said), and she knew nothing about knives. For the price she sold them to me, nobody would have ever wasted the time trying to fake a great knife. They were very inexpensive. As I said in the past, I have learned a great deal about knives, and especially Case since I bought these. Thanks for all the comments. Lane
