my grandfather's kissing crane knife

my grandfather carried this knife and passed away in 1991. im just curious if anyone has any iformation about this knife... i dont have a picture of the knife but it has a yellow handle, gold shield with two red cranes, has solengen with the kissing crane logo on each side on one blade and the bottoms of the blades near the hande has solengen germany on one blade and 3028XVLI on the other blade. is there anyway of finding out when this knife was made or anything? thank you for any help!

Are you sure its not marked XV11 ?? If so, it was made in 1978.

Hi Jackhorn, welcome to AAPK and I hope your grandfather's knife turns you into a knife collector. There is lots of information on Kissing Crane on this board and other places, start off by clicking on the search button at the top of the page and searching for Kissing Crane. Go through some of the posts that interest you and in no time you will be an expert on Kissing Crane. But just to get you started - the heritage of Kissing Crane goes all the way back to Peter Daniel Pauls, who started making knives in 1834. His daughter married a scissors maker named Frederich Robert Klass, who combined his company with Mr. Pauls' on the old man's death in 1869. In 1895, he registered "Kissing Crane" as his trademark. The company remained in the family for many generations. This is just the barest framework of the history of Kissing Crane, you can spend many pleasurable hours reading about the company and looking at the knives. Once you are finished, my guess is you will be a knife collector for life.

well I think it may be XVII but the first "I" doesn't have the top bar so it looks like an "L" but the last "I" is most def an "I"

jackhorn....it would be great if you could post a picture. The fourth number in the series 3028, the 8 indicates wood handles but you mentioned yellow. Are they wood ?

to be honest i dont really know what the handle is made of. im not an avid collector of knives so im unsure. but it looks like a copperhead? but old not new?

Sometimes the numbers can be hard to read. The copperhead pattern is a 20 for the first 2 digits. Third digit should be a 2...for 2 blade. Last should be a 6 for yellow composition. Making it a 2026.

Here is a pic of one. Does yours look like this?

it looks similar to that but the number on the blade says 3028xvli or 3028xvii but i cant find anything on google with 3028 as a number it has a printing on the blade kind of like yours but it says solingen with a little design around it that i also havent seen on google. it has robklass stamped with germany below it on one blade. as soon as i get the knife back from being cleaned i will get a picture for you.

I'm sorry jackhorn....I haven't had enough coffee yet this morning. The 30 pattern is a "baby" copperhead and should measure 3 5/16. The 20 is a large copperhead and measures 3 3/4.

it does look like the one on the right but the handle is a smooth yellow like the yellow delrin i seen while trying to research my knife.
