Bulldog 1st 2nd and 3rd Generation Cattle Kings

Here are a few First, Second, and Third Generation Bulldog Cattle Kings. These are 4 1/4 inch Equal End Stockman knives and they are often sold as first generation because it brings more money. I hope through these photos that you will be able to tell them apart more easily. The information is in Jim Parker's books and is often overlooked.

In the first picture both knives have 1985 English Steel on the sheepsfoot blade and both have a bare bowtie shield. BUT look at the jigging, only the one on the right has the correct jigging for a First Generation. The one on the left has jigging similar to the Third Generation but with the 1985 English Steel on the tang of the sheepsfoot blade we know it is a Second Generation.

The knife in the second picture is a surgical instrument steel Cattle King with pearl scales. Notice, it has Bulldog in the bowtie shield.

Great identification on these cattle kings, especially with the explanation on the difference in jigging. THe greenbone on the 1st gen. is entirely different from the 2nd and 3rd gen. As noted, the 1985 Engish steel stamp on the tang is the tipoff on the 2nd generation even though the 2nd and 3rd generation jigging is the same., If it was 3rd generation it would have either surgical Inst. or 1983 on the tang. Oops, I meant surgical inst. or 1993 on the tang of the 3rd generations.

When I was first in the market for one of these,I went to my local knife shop to look at one they had.they told me theres was a 2nd Gen.,I didn't question that but thought the $90 price tag was a little high.I went home and searched ebay and found the one pictured below."$38". After receiving it I went back to the shop to show and compare,the two were identical,same lettering on bowtie and same surgical Inst. on tang.Even after the comparison he still swore his was 2nd Gen. and worth more than mine.

I still go in the shop from time to time but its hard to trust someone after crap like that happens.

Your welcome johnnierotten, we are just trying to show the difference between generations, if the confusion ends, prices rise, that's my thought anyway. There are a lot of older Bulldog knives that are suspicious as well as the fact that these are often labled incorrectly.

It's my opinion that as long as there is confusion in the market, prices of course will fall off.
