Buck 110 advice and possible help,

Post by zed6309 »

Well ive decided next i want a buck 110, it had to happen  in the uk ther pretty pricey, around £50-60 without postage, plus i would rather have a older loved one :D ive been on ebay.com and there is alot  my help would be how much is a good price on say a 90's or used 110 , i have been offered plenty of help with shipping as some folk wont ship to the uk so i might be asking if i win one, thanks guys for any help as this would be my first 110 and i look forward to comparing it to the copy 110's i have, ::tu::

Im watching around 5 at the moment, there is a new one that would work out posted at £35 and seems reasonable

Hey Zed,

Here's one that went to 'Nam with me in '72.

The blade is down some, mostly from being bored and sharpening the damn thing when it didn't really need it.

When I wasn't sharpening it to death, I did some file work on it to pass the time and make it more visible if it got "lost" ( stolen ) like my first one did.

It's on my belt as I type and gets used pretty much every day.

They'll damn sure go the distance. ::tu::

THANKS!

I've got a VERY few that are "safe queens", probably 5 out of 100 or so. I try to buy a neat knife that won't get screwed up if I decide to put it back to work.

Hey Willie, seeing your nice knife again reminded me that I wanted to ask you how you got those very sharp or pointed cuts on the bolsters. It really looks nice. Thanks.

Thanks for the compliments.

I did all that stuff to it during what little "quiet time' we had during and after flight ops.

I had a set of "Craftsman" needle files that I'd traded for and used one of the flatter triangular files to get the sharp cuts in the bolsters. I had to use a rotary grindstone in a drill motor to get the cuts on that damn blade as it is harder than a minister's pecker. It knocked the teeth off the little file I originally tried to use on the blade.

It also has my last name on the bolsters as well but I photoshopped it out of the picture for some stupid reason. I didn't go by Willie back in those days as I do now.

Funny story about that knife. During one of our in-port periods at Subic Bay, Phillipines, one of the angry young black gents bought a butterfly knife from a local vendor. The vendor told the kid that knife would cut anything and stay sharp etc etc. It was made supposedly from jeep springs left over from WWII and was the ABSOLUTE BEST KNIFE in the world. Said gentleman was expounding the virtues of his new toy whilst playing the bad ass butterfly knife artist in our berthing compartment later that night. He went on and on and on along with trash talk etc. I walked over to where he was mouthing and told him it was a piece of crap and I'd prove it.

He bit, hook, line, and sinker. I took his super knife and proceeded to cut the edge off of it in one thin sliver from tang to tip and then I shaved the hair on my arm with that 110. He had a look on his face like the all the butter had slid off his biscuit!

I had also gotten pretty damn good at fast drawing and opening that old Buck. I put it back in the holster and then yanked it out and had it open in that dude's face and grinned and told him THIS sawed off Texas white boy knows how to use a knife. I then closed it one handed and shoved it back in the pouch. They all gave me a wide berth after that night. ;)

I can't thumb it out anymore due to arthritis. I can still open it one handed by holding the blade and swinging it. Nor can I grip the butt end and squeeze the lock one handed and let it close.

Oh well, I got nothing to prove anymore. ;)

Willie,
thanks for explaining your file work on your knife. Interesting stuff.

That's a great story you told. I laughed like hell.

Take care.

Great story willie, i cant wait to try and flick my 110 out quick draw style, i practiced with my 110 copy and found it pretty easy as the handle is pretty heavy so flicks out with no problem, i do love that file work and wish i had those skills as would give it a go , possibly practice on the copy

They're pretty easy to flip out. The blade has some weight to it and all you have to do is get it started out and then flip your wrist and the weight of the blade will carry it on out to the lock. My wrists are shot with osteoarthritis nowadays and things don't work like they used to. I can still pinch the blade and swing the handle down and open it one handed that way though. ;)

That was the first knife I ever tried file working on. It's pretty shabby compared to some of the file work I've seen demonstrated here by some of the members of this forum. I've learned to do better since, but have pretty much given up on it.

Thanks,
Willie

Yours is definitely a dandy and a damn fine lookin' old 110. It'll take good care of you. ;)

Zed, I think they started putting the extra pin in around '74. Some where in this vast fount of knowledge resides a 110 dating chart that will give you the info on 110 dates.

THANKS You Sir.

Young men such as yourself give me some hope for this country's future.

I'm not sure when the transition was made to 420. It's good steel if it's treated right and I think BUCK has that part figured out.

Might ask that question in the BUCK knives forum.
