The “Ol’ Ranger”

Okay; so I decided to take on a little tougher project. I was gonna try a trout carving, but I couldn’t figure how I would carve the fins so they wouldn’t break. So I thought I’d try a cowboy type. The figure is a little over 8 inches tall and carved from basswood. I think he came out OK!

Now... to paint or not. I think just stain and finish.

Now I've still gotta figure out how to carve that trout....

Can't wait to see that trout...I think I've seen folks carve the fins separate...but , I don't really know, I have never tried carvin' a fish or bird...I've always been hooked on the caricatures. You may want to get an issue of Woodcarving Illustrated or Carving Magazine, both are great publications and often cover a wide variety of subjects, including fish carving.

Don, I'm the proud owner of a 1956 14" Delta multi-speed. It has a transmission that allows you to run it direct drive or geared way down for metal. (I don't use it for metal, though) I was lucky to find it along with a similar vintage 15" Delta drill press with foot pedal and third pulley. They were both together and at a very reasonable price, as they'd been sitting for quite awhile. They just don't make 'em like that anymore!

Very nice saw , Barry! Yer right, they just don't make em' like that anymore... I would like to find a Woodmaster Model 500, has a 9 inch depth and a 24 inch throat.
