That tang stamp is impressive. It takes skill to do that freehand. Shame the blade shrunk and the backspring didn't.

Too bad about the run up on those blades. I don't know how to account for that. Blade change???

I wonder what the stamping is below "Challenge Cutlery"?

I'm guessing the "R" is from someone with that initial.

Folks will do most anything to a knife.

This knife has been cleaned poorly and too much steel sanded off. Or taken apart cleaned and put back together. Most of the makers marks are half gone.
Under the CHALLENGE should be Conn. But it looks like more letters than that.
This knife could be quiet old and out of Sheffield.
The “R” could be John Round’s mark. As he did make knives for the company when they were in Sheffield in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s .
The miter square around the “R” is consistent with knives made in Conn. But that symbol could go farther back to Sheffield. It’s a shame someone sanded away the old.

It is a factory Reject.

The tang stamp reads "Challenge Cutlery Corpn." The last word abbreviated is corporation.

This is one stamp you will not find listed in Goins, but I have seen several and own one with this stamp.

The one Challange that I have is marked Challenge Cutlery Corpn. and not too cleanly done. Mine is stamped 20 on the back instead of R.

It's pretty strange. The mark on the tang kinda reminded me of a "Q" at first glance, but I guess it is an "R".

The tang stamp didn't bother me much. I have other knives with that stamp, although they are much deeper. I have nothing to go on but I think that stamp is one of their later ones. I've never seen a Challenge master blade like this one has, but Challenge seems to surprise me with something new to me on a regular basis. I thought it might be one of their Stainless knives when I looked at the ad and really hoped that it was. I don't think so. The blade is magnetic, but then so is the marked STAINLESS blade on my old Challenge Scout. The blades on this knife have been buffed so slick that they are "greasy" feeling. The seller shared that concern with me after I contacted him about the knife. It feels almost like chrome plating, but they aren't plated that I can tell. There is no copper showing anywhere that there are rub marks and steel has to be copper plated for chrome to stick to it.


I forgot one pic last night.

Here is the end of the punch. Notice how far out it is.


Here is the other end, which looks pretty normal. ( other than proud pins, sanding marks and being buffed to HELL and back)


Every Challenge knife that I own has brass pins.

This knife looks to me to have been apart and re-assembled
A. Poorly
or
B. With parts from other knives.

In defense of the seller. I've bought from him before. That knife was buffed a bit much, but I didn't care at the time as I bought it to carry and got it cheap. I notified him of my displeasure with the knife and he said no problem. Ship it back for a full refund. No arguing, no complaining. I do think he could have represented it better in the ad. He sells a lot knives and should know what a problem knife looks like.

Whether or not new parts were used it is definitely a poor attempt at a redo.
They didn't even sand out the hammer marks.
The first knife I fixed when I was 13 years old looks better than that one.

Being magnetic has nothing to do with it being stainless.
Some stainless is magnetic and some isn't.
It depends on the nickel to chromium content plus the other materials that are put into making stainless steel. There are a lot of different types of stainless with different materials used.
Don't go by the old magnetic test. It's not accurate.
