Some new ones I just got

1st is a Case XX Jack Jigged bone from the 1980s, basically the first of many years of questionable quality by Case. While you could still get some decent knives early on in the 80s, shortly into around 82' this all ceased and quality suffered until the early 2000s. You can tell by the snap alone but there are other things to look for when holding one. Note Xs replaced the Dot system. Also the long "C" returned. The snap is a little too smooth but overall quality looks to be decent.
The next is a great quality made Case XX Jack Appaloosa Bone from 79', it's a monster through and through! Snap is superb and all materials used are top shelf just like the earlier 70s examples are.
The last is a Knife Pull from W. R. Case and Sons that you could only get if you were at that particular show the year they sold and gave them away. The Bladeshow in Atlanta. I understand that you can also get one if you're a club member.

although those are some fine knives 46, i beg to differ with you on the low quality case knives between the 80's and the year 2000. parker had contracted the case classics to queen in the 90's with the exception of maybe 4 or 5 patterns. they were and are among the best made knives out there.

I have a trapper in App bone but it's nothing like yours, mine is an 80's (i think 84) model that would'nt compare to yours.
IMO there is for sure a difference in quality of some Case pattern's from the 80's on.

No, I was obviously not talkin bout the Classics. Many of which I have owned and are some of the best made knives out there. Although, that being said, the later Classic Toenail with the glued on shield was a royal piece of garbage! At one time I owned more than 20 of the true Case Classics, all made by Queen. Never had any of the Saddlehorns and others that were produced but used to be close friends with Roger, who was a huge Classics guy and he schooled me on the line. May he rest in peace. Very true JR when only select patterns were actually made by Case!

Right Marty and thank you! I too have owned many through the 80s and 90s and was always hoping for things to improve during that period. It certainly wasn't Grandpa's knife.

No prob chet! I've been known to make some mistakes before in here, that one however would not be one I would make. These items I got today were all gifts from BIGHEAD who I consider to be an authority where W. R. Case is concerned. His collections have been invited to shows for display only of course. He's been a club member for several years and has some great information concerning the brand.

Hi all,

It would appear that I, too, have recently been smitten by the "Case Virus"; and while I have at least learned a bit about the frames, scales and numbering system (as it pertains to my particular interests) I know nothing of this quality issue. I would really appreciate a quick lesson in what years are good and/or bad before I go off spending lots of money on Case knives.

I buy and trade Case knives pretty much on a daily basis....I will buy ANY Case ..if the price is right.....BUT!!..I collect pre 80's Case knives.
Of course this excludes Case Classics...I will buy those any chance I can "for they're resale value" .......but as I said earlier..I don't consider them actual Case knives.

ah, I have no interest in the Case Classics for I find them egregiously homely. The only models I find attractive are the copperlocks, several of the stockman series and the peanuts. Given that information, are there any years of production that I should specifically avoid? I do not intend to resell, but rather to acquire and use.

This is just my opinion.......I try to avoid 1980's and 90's.
But I have definitely seen a rise in quality since 2000. ....of the 3 patterns that you mentioned..I like the Copperlocks.
Peanuts are my least favorites.
