Just got an older w 49, when????
I have no idea of the year but im pretty sure it is right after the bowie stamp of the 40's. Who knows?

Thanks for the link. Helpful, yes but a lot of deciphering is needed. Somewhere there is a site with a near full chronology of the 49. I am a believer that the horse came before the cart IE they made the sheath and then someone asked for a longer hanger. They did it with a d ring so it did not have to be redesigned and if someone wanted the short one a quick SNIP did it. I think the three small rivet sheath with the guard marked w49 and western boulder usa came from the mid 60's or earlier. I believe there was a western like the collins 18 machete that was the predecessor to these w 49's. Just my opinion. Other companies manufactured them also, they came to be known incorrectly as the V44.

I never did much research on Western W-49s, but I think Western was the last company that did make "V44" machetes, and they had either steel or brass guards with flat discs on the ends.

with the combination of stamp on crossblock,small rivets and sheath i believe its from 1960-67
