After Phil escorted me off the forum for my political rants 2 years ago, I got to thinking about it and I ordered up about 20 Rough Riders. I keep them in a big wooden bowl and if anybody at the house wants one, they are welcome. I found that I really like the four inch gunstock jacks and I use them all over the property for whatever abusive or legitimate work is called for; I like to keep my good and precious darlings of more royal blood... from harm's way lol. I just got done digging adhesive out of the heads of about 1000 deck screws that had to be removed on a little home improvement project, and that was a good job for a RR. I don't hate the Chinese. I am a little put out with the American entrepreneurs who sold us down the river. Well... maybe I do hate them a little.

I have one just like it. I got it about a year and a half ago. I carried it for several months but have not had it in my pocket for a while.
Good knife and I think it is a great choice for your first. I call mine a Sowbelly.
I also have a RR peanut in my desk at work but I do not have a picture of that one.

gino i paid £8.95 for mine, for this money you get a solid little knife that you can actually use without worring about scratching it plus looks good,

I don't remember what I paid for mine but I do know that I have never paid over $11.50 including shipping for any Rough Rider knife.

Don't have a stockman but do have a brown sawcut lockback and a red bone whittler that are very nice. The RR line is well made and very sharp out of the box. +1 to Sablemaster, never paid more than $12.00 for any of the dozen or so that I have. I've been collecting the Dr.'s knives. The last one I got that I absolutely loved was one with deep, deep artificial abalone scales - the picture doesn't do it justice.

I like the pocket pouches you made. You say you "knocked up" as if it were a few minutes job, but clearly that cannot be the case. They appear to be nicely done up with proper stitching and all.

I'd like to try to make several myself but have some questions. Foremost is what did you use to do the stitching, a heavy duty machine meant for working leather? If it was a normal household grade sewing machine then is the leather very thin and soft?

I have some pig skin about 1mm thick that I want to use. It seems rather stiff and I don't know if my cousin's sewing machine can handle it. (I could sew it myself if so, as my grandmother taught me how to use one when I was a wee bitty kid.) Or am I likely to have to use one of those scoring wheels and then hand sew it?

Also, how do I know if the pig skin is safe to use? I tried burning a sliver of it to see if it looked greenish (chrome tanned, not good for metal), but the leather dye made it too smokey to determine. I asked the guy at the leather store how it was tanned but he had no idea.

If you've any pointers I would appreciate hearing them. And like chet, I too would like to see that table top!

I carried a Rough Rider Barlow all last summer and It held up real well,still very sharp and it's cheap enough so if I lose it I can just get another.

I bought around a half dozen Rough Riders when I first became interested in traditional type folders. If nothing else, they are good for trying out different patterns before you invest in more expensive brands. Some of them are very nice to look at - with good to excellent fit and finish. Most also have a good edge out of the box. But after using various patterns for a few months, my personal opinion is this - for a cost of $7-10, you get a $7-10 knife. Nothing more, nothing less. I've heard often that RR's hold a good edge - not in my experience. The 2 or 3 that I have carried or used on a regular basis are so soft that I wonder if there is any heat treat at all. As an example - when new, I could open 5-10 envelopes before the knives started tearing vs. cutting the paper. After sharpening -same basic performance. That is as good a basic test as I can think of. In comparison, my Schatt & Morgan with ATS-34 has probably opened over 200 envelopes, with very little loss in performance.

I won't be buying any more Rough Riders. I would rather have one $50 Queen stockman than 10 Rough Riders - that simple. I also think it's funny that I can't remember anyone ever having anything positive to say about 440A - other than good corrosion resistance. All of a sudden though, I'm always hearing that RR's hold a good edge. I think maybe that when people buy a cheap knife, and it is better than they expected - they convince themselves that it is a good value. It is a case of getting exactly what you pay for in my opinion. thanks

thanks for the input aplehr,collecting anything because they are cheap is kinda odd in my way of thinking anyway,i read all the time about people buying these things because they can get them for under $10,what a waste of time who cant buy a rr for $10 bucks they arent really collecting just buying cheap knives ,they would be much better off searching for old imperial shell knives with a little history behind them and they are good users and lots of times like mint for $10 or less and they will evetually increase in value and in my opinion the hunt is the best part of collecting

I owned a small congress for about a year until the backspring broke.I knew better when I bought it.I watched and bought an old Wards on E-bay for $16.Steel liners and has great snap and that was about 6 years ago.It amazed me when I read this thread.I agree with Aplhr,Troyl, Bighead and Veiu.It would be advisable Zed to be tutored on buying on E-bay.I learned the hard way,several times.JMHO...........

I have been buying stuff on ebay since the early 00's but as mentioned above you cant buy knives on ebay here in the uk , this makes collecting very very hard,

for me, collecting knives is a hobby, so I think it should be a fun thing to do, and I could appreciate a good knife no matter where they were made, US, Japan, Germany, China, UK. not trying to get political here, just appreciating a fellow man's collection.

thanks mate, and yes there was a lot of knife makers here once upon a time shefield being the better known and some still made there but there are so many restrictions here it makes it hard and postage from overseas can bumb up a price beyondmy means, i was amazed at what is available in the U.S pocket knife wise but many dont ship overseas and as said price can go up a lot, for me its a money issue so these are what iam collecting and TBH ive got 2 RR's 2 timber wolves a elk ridge and a kissing cranes and they seem well made for the money, yes not upto say case but what i personaly can afford, if someone doasnt like these they dont have to post , but i will collect what i find on my journey and what is affordable for me, and the main thing for me is to enjoy them,
