Not My Knife, Not My Auction, I Did Not Bid

This is a neat old Robeson pattern, numbered 622038. They made it with a spear master, as well, 622038-1/2. They were 3 1/2" long.

Some have stated that the arrow is pointed at the bullseye on the bolster. Not sure if that was the intent.

This knife sold on Ebay this week for $304.00.

Can you post some pictures when you clean this up? I don't think it is going to need much. That is a very interesting knife, is it in any of your books?

As stated, I did not bid on it.
I do have one in relic condition that I used to lay on my display table just to illustrate how long someone had stuck with one knife.

Both versions are shown in Bruce Voyles' American Blade Collector's Guide To Antique Knives.

I think the knife will clean up, as it looks as though it's never been used.

Some would leave it as is, and I think that's OK, too.

I was impressed by the price it achieved. Maybe it's time for me to sell out.

Also, the results of this auction should make DannO quite pleased with his purchase of that beautiful, near mint, Robeson 027 EO a week or two back. Thirty-three dollar difference in purchase price, I think.

I bid this up for awhile, but chickened out in the end. It was hard not to go crazy on it. I really would have enjoyed looking at it in a display. Imagine what our fathers would think about paying $300+ for a rusty knife???

If I remember right, Robeson used a bushing in the pivot pin on this knife. Supposed to make it last longer and open smoother?

Knife-nut, I don't know anything about that bushing in the pin. The example
that I have has the arrow shield, but does not have the recessed ring around
the pivot pin.

I think you might be thinking about Robeson's MasterCraft line of knives that
had a "U" shaped bronze bearing applied to the back end of the tang, the
surface that bore on the backspring.

Those knives were usually etched, "NEV-R-BIND OILESS BEARING" in a flowing
banner on the master blade.

Sometime after 1940, they moved the bronze bearing to the inside surface of
the spring and it was a box shaped insert. They changed the name of the line
to "PERMA-LUBE".

The "U" shaped bearings had a tendency to fall off leaving three little "V" shaped
cutouts in the tang. These would catch on the backspring, causing the blade to
stop each time. This prompted one knowledgible knife writer to describe the
knives as having, " a patented five position master blade". He just didn't know.

If you ever encounter a MasterCraft knife that stops in more positions than two
(open and closed), it's missing its bronze bearing and most likely cannot be repaired.
