So what is your opinion a USA Schrade brochure or Chinese?
While going through some more stuff I chanced upon this brochure I thought it spoke of a lot more than just the words in it. It kind of showed the consideration a company like Schrade had for both its product and its customers as well as the pride it had in itself and its people. Aw we know this did not come from the present Chinese manufacturer. It is just a little sour grapes, sarcasm on my part. However the last page of this brochure has the Schrade bill of rights ( which I am sure most of you have seen before ). I have heard that the Communist Chinese are going to put a bill of rights in with each knife they sell they are just waiting until the last American company goes under. There Bill of rights will say HA HA American roundeyes now that we are the only knife makers we will make what we want charge what we want and if you don't like it you can cut your next steak with a sharp piece of rock. Because it is about time you learned that your foreign buying to save a dollar or two now means that you have no rights. Happy New year LT

LT ,
The last line in post "Because it is about time you learned that your foreign buying to save a dollar or two now means that you have no rights. " This is so very true !!! My question is this, how can we stop this foreign invasion when the people that we work with , live by and know ,don't care. They buy foreign crap!! All they see is the cheap price and that is where it stops . they don't think about the negative impact of their actions !
Your brochure is pretty cool!
see ya Randy

Randy I do not have the answers and it is probably to late any way. I recently read a long dissertation by a well known authority on the economy, foreign trade, ect. In the end he said and surmised exactly the same thing I posted regarding this subject. Please do not ask me where the article was I am happy when I can find my slippers . Guess I need a dog the cats will not bring them to me ( claim it is not in there contract ). I blame a lot on politics and politicans ( because you can bet they are getting theirs ). However the real problem as always is with we the people, the lazy American who has had it so easy so long that they have lost touch with reality and have forgotten the sactifices which were made to give them the freedoms they now hold as God given and which we are pissing away. Forgetting that these rights and affluence have been paid for in American blood. However the awakening will once again show we are at our best when things are at there worst. Sad but true. Those who forget the mistakes of the past are destined to relive them. Something wicked this way comes and we invited it with our own uncaring actions. In my case it does not matter, my sorrow goes out to future generations. For history has also shown we reap what we sow. ( WOW is that enough platitudes in one paragraph, sorry. ) In answer to your question here is one mans opinion. The journey of 1000 miles starts with the first step ( there got another platitude in ). So I take that step by trying to be aware of whats happening and not buying those products, it is virtually impossible at this point to do that 100 percent of the time ( for whatever good it does ) but I try and as you can see I preach to anyone who will listen, to do the same thing. By the way at the end of the first posting I said Happy New year that was not supposed to be a statment of cynacism relating to the posting ( I read it over and it could be construed that way. ) I was simply saying Happy New Year. I was waiting for someone to nail me on that ( canadian whiskey)and you are right except in this case the import is more expensive than the domestic. Then again My feeling towards Canadians is that they are family who live next door. In all fairness over the years I probably have drank enough Bourbon to refloat the Titanic if they could have pumped it into it so I am just sharing the wealth before renal shutdown. You must admit our friends and Allies the Canadians are not proliferating and undercutting our economy with low price imports. The fact is that the Canadians with there proximity and knowledge of our country its policys and problems would probably refuse to accept our country if we offered to annex to them under there government. lt, the canadians are gonna kill us with whiskey
not financial sabotage or worse as the chinese have sworn to do. we can't avoid all chinese products but i can make a stand when it comes to chinese knives. it's a shame our economy forces some to buy the cheapest item no matter the quality or consequence. buy american when possible.

I agree and if it is canadian whiskey that finally gets me I will go with half a smile . Now if someone will buy my collection I can buy a 3 masted sailboat fill it with Canadian whiskey and go to the south seas and get lost Perhapes Tahiti where the girls don't wear no tops and everything defys gravity and points upward. That way when they found me again I would be three sheets in the wind. Then I could pass on with a full smile on my face. LT

I took my 17 year old daughter to Wal-mart today, because her anti-war mother had gotten her a gift cert for Christmas from there.jonet143 wrote: but i can make a stand when it comes to chinese knives.
I wandered by the knife counter and asked to see a Buck trapper that appeared to have promise (from the picture) as they don't actually have the knives on display. Upon holding the knife and opening it, I saw on the back of the secondary blade the stamp "China." I said, "What is this crap?" The clerk said, "Most of them are made there now." I said, "I dodged too much chinese steel in Vietnam to pay for it now." I turned abruptly and left him standing there with his mouth open.
Maybe if enough people let the clerks know how they feel about junk made in china, the managers will eventually hear about it and just maybe do something about it. A long shot I know, but a guy can hope.

What does it take to bring about change?
I can tell you, but would you believe? Would you follow?
As far as the borchure goes, these are exactly the hollow words of an American company. We're eternal. WE grant you this and WE grant you that. The problem, that we can clearly observe now, is that Schrade was not eternal. Schrade didn't have the power to save itself let alone give you a list of "Rights".
I hope we can learn from the failure of this company, but let's look at what has risen from the ashes. LT, did anyone from Schrade move on to do anything good? Should we now support them and forget a once venerable name? Maybe there is hope after all.
I think we can all agree that buying loads of Chinese anything is stupid, so let's all pledge our support of American companies and find a website that will tell us where we should buy all of our American made products. As for me, I'll be happy with my Dickel Sour Mash, and my Saranac beer, brewed in New York,(when I'm not brewing my own) but my cigars have got to be Dominican. As far as my Chinese food, well, they have to have something to do while they're plotting our final downfall.
Happy New Year.

LT,
What this younger generation needs,is to go thru a good depression !
Not a recession, but a depression like we had in the 1930's.
Sure,a lot of them would lose their big, expensive trophy houses that are mortgaged to the hilt.
Some of them may learn that it pays to buy quality tools that last.
Some may also learn the principle of "use it up,wear it out,and make it do".

The typical consumer in America has no idea of the history of our country and the blood and tears that it cost for them to have the freedom to choose. They have no idea that every single product they buy overseas puts an american job at risk, and the avereage consumer still has the power to change corporate thinking. If enough of us dont buy imported product (CHINA) and the corporate world see's a big enough drop in quarterly reports, they might just set aside the greed and do something for our country besides take!
The biggest problem I see is our political policy, we have the power as a country to control our imports. If we cant control the low cost of foreign labor we can adjust it at our borders with a tariff. Thats what they are designed to do. The problem is our politicians and corporate ceo's are selling us out for personal gain thinking they will be above the reprocussion of their decisions(They do know china is a communist country??) I know I've listened to a ton of the old timers stories of what they had to do and sacrifice to give my generation the freedom and prosperous lifestyles we enjoy, and if I cant even do a small thing like buying american to repay them I am no better.
And to back that, I reordered a filler panel for my Schrade display last year. When it came in I saw the box with the American flag on the cover and china on the back and to put it mildly it flat pissed me off. The next day taylor had it all sent back and we are no longer a dealer of schrade.
The good side of that is that it lead me to collecting the quality American made knives and meeting alot of like minded gentlemen.

After reading this, I went to a local hardware store and bought the last remaining Schrade 34OT USA. Cost me $22.95.

Just to let you know I have gone 200. miles around all stores from bloomington. IL and they have been gone for over 2 YEARS now.
I even checked out Sheboygan WIS. and small towns. I was thinking of going to Minnasota just to buy up Schrades. Can NOT find in stores.
You lucky DOG you.

This hardware store had this knife display case almost hidden from view - either because it's right over the Philadelphia city line and heaven forbid someone should buy a deadly pocket knife - or maybe not that many people buy pocketknives anymore. Regardless, this knife was a genuine Made in the USA by Imperial Schrade Cutlery. The little instruction leaflet in the box was copyrighted 2000. The price was probably from back then also. The only other knives they had were the usual Vicorinox and a couple of Buck lockbacks and stockman patterns.
I looked up the current Schrade website and noticed that Taylor Brands, Inc owns the rights to the Schrade, Schrade Tough, Uncle Henry brands and is also licensed by S&W to produce knives under their brand.
I own a number os S&W firearms (all made in the USA) but will not buy one of the Chinese knives.
A few years back at a gun show I saw what I thought were Kershaw Whirlwinds going for $9.95 (and I had paid $65 for mine!). When I picked the demo model up, the blade deployed as if it were going through regrigerated peanut butter (s.l.o.w.l.y) and wiggled back and forth. The tang stamp said "China."

In case you were wondering, $22.95 was the MSRP in 1990. Sounds like you got a great piece of old stock or else a very good deal, as the last MSRP was $33.45 in 2004.

You're absolutely right! The sticker said $22.95 (the Buck knives were marked $32.95). When the knife was scanned it came up $32.95, but I pointed out the sticker price, which is what I paid. Too bad it was the last one. I'd go back and get another for justold52 if they had more.

I say we start a petition, by knife collectors. And get as many names as we can. Posy links in your E-Bay advertisements, post links on other knife forums...
Send these petitions to American Knife Companies, letting them know we will continue to support them, but they have to support us as well, and make a quality product at a reasonable price.
We send these petitions to Department Stores, letting them know this is what we want in Cutlery, not the current crap they are selling.
Could it cause change? Maybe/maybe not... but it never hurts to try!
As far as knife sales go, we as the collectors probably make a significant amount of the buyers market in the long term. You figure the average person may buy 1 pocket knife once every couple years? Depending on their profession. A Knife collector, I pick up a couple every month it seems.
I would also send these petitions to American companies that are having knives made overseas (Buck for Example) and let them know we are not going to buy these knives any longer, and they are wasting their money turning to this cheap labor market. (Of course in reality, the Avg. Joe Schmoe would still buy one...) but it may send a message!

Good Idea
I like this idea, will anyone sponsor it? It would be a good start, but then we have to start a boycott of all the Low quality makers, and we can't harm the German, Finnish, British, or (dare I say) French imports or we lose some good products from them.SFC ADP wrote:I say we start a petition, by knife collectors. And do we ask American based companies like Buck to get rid of their pocket knife and other non-U.S. made knife lines?
I'm up for it, but expect a few more U.S. companies to fold and Case to start charging even more for their products.

In my opinion, German, British, Europe in general has not had a harsh impact on the American Cutlery. If anything I am sure the suffer from the same problems due to the Asian Invasion. German Cutlery Prices are pretty much in line with American Cutlery, as they do not have a cheap labor market like Asia.
So I do not see a ban on those cutlery companies, as they do offer fair competition for American Companies, and provide a checks & balances, If it was strictly American Cutlery, we would suffer a price surge (due to corporate greed)
So we are not wanting an American Knife Monopoly, yet we do not want a Chinese Knife Monopoly as well. Keep my money here in the states.
As far as Buck is concerned, I would let them know I am not buying their overseas products, plain and simple. If your an American Company, you have a responibilty to the American Worker and keep their jobs right here. As an American Consumer of the Cutlery Products, I will only purchase knives that are not made in China, India, Pakisatan, and any other cheap crap they can come up with for labor.
Man this issue just always gets me fired up!
Next I want a petition to the U.S. Congress to make Switchblades Legal for carry in the U.S. and to lift the federal ban!!!

I had to stop & buy a knife today. I went to the dentist & had a tooth pulled. By way of compensation to myself for the pain involved I stopped at a couple stores where they still had a few Schrades. I picked up the last 36OT, Saddleman, at a feed store. I have several, but it was nice to walk into a brick & mortar store & walk out with a new USA Schrade in my pocket.
