The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

not sure whats with this one,scales dont match very well ive also put a reference up from a 1982 price guide and if you look at nail nic is missing on main blade in pic because they photod backside for some reason unioun cut co is so faint with a 10x loupe that i assume it there just like in pic of book but on shield side has kabar stamped right on seam i dont believe its beeen apart has good snap and blades align perfectly my wife bought it in an estate sale jewelery box several years ago not the normal place you find messed with knives on the other hand being so close to the factory could have been an employees knife made from parts

I would love to live near the Olean or Bradford area at least for one summer to hit all the yard and garage sales. I figure there has to be some retired knife folk selling stuff in that area that you just can't find in other parts of the country. I've got an old Kabar about that size that would be mint except for a broken blade that I'll probably never find. ::mdm::
