Friedmann & Lauterjung
Does anyone know if the old firm Friedmann & Lauterjung became or had anything to do with Lauterjung & Sohn, who imports Puma knives??? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Mike

Re: Friedmann & Lauterjung
http://www.taylors1000.com/manufacturer ... _all.htm#FFRIEDMAN (FRIEDMANN) & LAUTERJUNG
New York, New York
In business in 1892
“Electric” Razor Trademark ELECTRIC
Used by Friedman & Lauterjung, New York City ca. 1873-1890. Moved to Newark,
New Jersey from ca 1890-1910. Moved to Walden, New York ca. 1910-1920
Then you have,
http://www.pumaknifeman.com/PumaKnifeStory.htmlThe next generation, Eugen Lauterjung (1883-1969) and Franz Lauterjung (1888-1976), entered the company after the First World War. They were the first members of the family to be "Just" businessmen. Under their influence, the sales emphasis turned increasingly to export, making considerable increases in production necessary. The two directors adopted various measures in order to cope effectively with this demand. A large building was erected, which still serves as the main factory building even today. From then on the PUMA-WERK in Solingen had two places of production. Both were equipped with efficient machines to provide the necessary assistance for those processes carried out by hand in order to cope with the increasing production of fine cutlery. Apart from that, the company abandoned the then still common practice of home labour in the cottages of the surrounding district and changed the whole production to craftsmen within their own factory. This move was a sensation at the time in Solingen. The transition to a more progressive method of working immediately showed in an improvement in quality. It was now possible to control all stages of production directly within the factory.
After beating google up for 30 or so minutes, it's hard to say for sure, but I bet there was some interaction.

Hello...
Our Friedmann & Lauterjung knife is a favorite of ours, even with the scale issues. The second knife is marked Lauterjung & Co. Solingen and I was wondering about the possible connection also? Did you find out any more info?

Re: Friedmann & Lauterjung
We just bought this Friedmann & Lauterjung in a junker batch.. It's not the greatest condition, but it is hard to find a F & L in any shape, so I am happy with it!
I am still trying to figure out the handle material? One side is much darker than the other, but it doesn't appear to be fooled with, IMO.

Thanks, Mike.
Ivory is kind of what I suspect? I actually have a couple ivory knives that are darker on one side than the other. My ivory knives seem to have a wide arrange of colors. Some are ivory white, while others look quite yellow or orange. I just haven't had one that is a "brown" as this one. Here is an Electric that has two different colors of ivory.
I love the old Friedmann & Lauterjung's. I always think about how if JBF wasn't in the cutlery business, Case knives might never have existed.

I am with you on that about Case I mean, but we need to be careful because the Case Collectors typically think that the Case's are all that!!!!
Yes ivory ages differently for sure that is one thing I love about it!!

No disrespect intended at all to Case collectors. I love Case knives myself. But, history is history. Really, from what I have read, it was the Case women that married well & I am sure it opened many doors for the brothers. Theresa married JBF. Emma married John Brown. Debbie Case married H.N. Platts. Mary Theresa married Herbert Crandall. Those are the ones off the top of my head..

Re: Friedmann & Lauterjung
I've had this knife in my collection for years. It came from an estate sale. Back then I didn't study knives, I just aquired/collected/accumulated them. I've been going through some of my earlier aquisitions and came across this one. My research shows it being a trademark of Friedmann & Lauterjung. But the only other info is that they were contract built. Thought i'd have you guys (and/or gals) take a look and see what else I can find out.
It's tang stamped Electric Cut. Co.-Newark N.J. It has brass liners and pins with iron bolsters. As you can see it's not real fancy, but it's slim, very pocket friendly and built like a tank. The snap is amazing with an excellent halfstop. I think the handles are either rosewood or ebony. The fit and finish are very good, but it does have what I would consider normal wear. It's right at 3-3/4" long.
Any thoughts or info?
Thanks,
WB

Re: Friedmann & Lauterjung
Hello,
Nice to see all the Friedmann & Lauterjung knives.
I only have one and it's a bit rough around the edges, but I like it.
It's a whittler that's just over 3 5/8" long with a broken pen blade.
The springs are not split, but are tapered.
If you like F&L history, you may enjoy a short article I recently
published on the JBF Champlin web page.

Friedmann & Lauterjung
I could not find a thread for F&L knives which is odd because I thought I had started one awhile ago but anyway here is my latest one. The carved pearl is great and shaped like a fish no less!!
