Buffing Compound
Where is the best (& cheapest) place to buy buffing compound? I was just on K & G and when the order was tallied, it was around $45 PLUS almost $17 s/h......almost half of purchase price! I checked ebay but wasn't familiar with the stuff they had. I can't remember where I got what I have on hand. Any good references??

Re: Buffing Compound
Thanks guys for the response but I'm talking about compound to put on a buffer. It usually comes in a cake from 1/2-3 pounds. I did see some that K&G had that I've never used in 10 oz. jars.
Mr. B I use that Simichrome all the time. It's a hard worker on bolsters and back springs......makes'em POP!!

Re: Buffing Compound
I basically use 3 or 4 different compounds, but I would be the first to say I am not an expert at buffing.
That said this is what I have settled on.
For heavy cutting I use Emery.
The next step one I use is Black Magic.
Some times I will use white rough next if I am having problems with scratches.
I usually finish with No Scratch Pink.
Others compounds I have used for various applications are Zam & Green Tripoli.
I also use a special compound for plastic on a string wheel that works wonders on Delrin without burning it. I don’t think Jantz carries it though.
Brad,
I may have some small pieces of one or two of these if you just want to try it without having to pop for a whole bar.

Re: Buffing Compound
I'm not sure of the exact grit qualities of each at the moment and it's too late and cold to walk out to the shop, but....
I buy from either Jantz or Texas Knifemaker's Supply and get the large blocks.
Gray is fairly coarse.
Red is next. Kind of like Jeweler's Rouge.
Last is the No Scratch Pink like Orvet. (I like this stuff!)
Their websites can probably give you specifics, but this is the cheapest way I've found to get what works.

Re: Buffing Compound
I appreciate all the replies fellers. I hate to keep dragging this on but I probably should have been more clear in my 1st post.
I know what I want, I'm just looking for a place that doesn't charge enough s/h to feed a 3d world country for six months. I don't mind paying for what I get but I DO mind getting robbed on s/h charges.
I buy from K & G quite often and never felt their s/h was outrageous until I went to order this.
I really only need some pink at this time, but I figured it would be cheaper to stock up and save(?) on the s/h. What I had was maybe 10#'s and would fit easily in a flat rate box. I didn't try Texas KMS yet, so I'll see how I make out there.
Again thanks for the replies.......

Re: Buffing Compound
Thanks Perry, by the time I read your post I had already purchased some from TKS. They were a little cheaper on s/h than the other usual places. I put in a fairly big order of other stuff to make me feel better about the s/h. Most of the time, and in this case, you can put in a big order for not a lot more s/h than a small order costs.
By the time I spread the s/h out on all the things I ordered, it comes out a lot better. I can sleep better at least.

Re: Buffing Compound
I like matchless white and zam, I use those two most often. I also keep on hand a yellow compound expecially for brass, and I keep some green chrome and scratchless pink on hand too. the pink is about as good as the zam
