I don't have a ton of Benchmade knives, but I do have some that are fantastic users.
This is my first Benchmade, circa 1989; I don't remember the date for sure. but it was an early one, made when they were still in Clackamas.
It is a Walter Brend design. This was in the time when I was managing a cutlery store and was in the Benchmade shop as often as I could manage to pick up knives or to have coffee & cigars with Les & Jody Sampson. Al Mar and Les were good friends, (incidentally Al Mar once told me that Benchmade was the only American company who Al trusted enough to have them make a knife for Al Mar Knives. They made some autos for Al).
One day we were talking about AL Mar and I told Les that my Al Mar number was 043. Not that I bought anywhere close to all of them, but I had right of first refusal on all the new Al Mar patterns at the pre-release.
Then Les was telling me about this new knife they were coming out with that was designed by Walter Brend, I told him I wanted one. He said he would save one of the first ones for me.
I didn't think much about it until one day I got a call that the knives were ready, so I went by their shop to pick it up along with an order for the stores.
Les said, "This one is special for you, I put your Al Mar number on it."
So that is why you can see the 0043 above Brend’s etch.
(The scratches on the handle are actually on my scanner, not the knife).
This next knife is also an early one, made before 1992 when I got out of the cutlery business. It may be the first Benchmade knife pattern to be made with ATS-34, if not the very first, certainly one of the first few designs made in ATS-34.
This is a used & abused Benchmade auto. My stepson was working for the City of Salem helping in supervising an inmate landscaping crew. One of the inmates found the knife beside a road or in a City Park. My stepson brought it home to me and I cleaned it up. It works great and fires hard!
One of my favorite EDC knives is this Mini Griptilian. I love the Axis Lock. I wish more companies used it. It is a great lock!
