Need Boker Backsprings

Post by judewhopper »

I have a Boker Stockman of unknown age. It belonged to my son-in-laws grandfather. Except for a missing badge and one broken spot of bone it's in pretty good shape for the age that I think it is.

I called Boker and they told me that the company that made this knife is no longer in business? After WWII Boker didn't have a license to do business in the USA so they sold knives under the “United” company’s name. Anyway, no parts.

I think I can grind out the backsprings if I can find the material. Most places don’t have it the correct width. I even have a friend who may have his surface grinder still hooked up to work down the thickness.

I think I need something close to carbon stainless steel 40-45 RC. Need 1 piece .074" thick, about 3/8" wide and at least 4" long. And 1 piece .087" thick, at least .1/2" wide, and at least 4" long. I’ve looked around and found some things but nothing exact.

Or... Any chance anyone has one of these they’ve junked? I would also like to patch this handle and replace the missing badge that I don't even know what it looked like and one of those new Camaros that look like the 69s or the Challenger either one. Ohh, and some $1.75 per gallon gas!

Thanks,
Danny

Danny,
That looks a lot like the Boker 9885 pattern. I may have a backspring you can have for that one.
The knife you have is 4" long closed, correct?
Does it look like the bottom knife in this photo?

United Bokers were made circa 1984-1994. the shield would have looked like this:

Thanks Blue,

That sounds like the knife. I guess you could call mine 4” closed - it measures about 3.950” closed with my calipers. The widest backspring (only has the primary blade on it) is about 1/2” wide on one end by 3.900 long and not as wide on the other/blade end. The second spring is about the same on both ends and a touch shorter - about 1.840 long.

Any chance you have an extra “united” badge?

And anyone know if the guy at Boker told me everything wrong? Are parts still available/company closed? He missed the era of the knife by 40 years. At least that explains the blades not being sharpened away.

Definitely interested in the springs... Both of mine are broken on one end somehow.

Thanks,
Danny

Hey Danny,
Here's a link to some further info on the United Bokers:
http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... ited+boker
You may have spoken with Terry Trahan at Boker. Terry is quite knowledgable about the Boker company. The history of Boker and Boker USA, as well as all of the associated companies is difficult to trace.
United Boker was a separate company created by John Parker and Kevin Pipes of Smoky Mountain Knife Works. Boker Germany made knives for United Boker under contract, which is why they are so similar.
I know I have at least one backspring that should fit your knife - maybe more. If you'll send me a PM with your address I'll send it to you. Not as lucky on the shield. The best option on that one is to check on ebay for an old cheap beater, and pull the shield off it. They'll pop right out and you can superglue it in your knife.
