You have a beautiful collection. I would be concerned about loss.

Knowing that, I would create some form of "electric card catalog" of what you own and the relative price. Make several hard copies in case your computer crashes. I got hit by lightening two years ago--I know that problem.

If you have home insurance, get a copy of this plus pictures to your agent. If not presently insured, ask about an insurance rider for the collection.

As for organization, I would ask you on what makes you more productive. When you search for a specific knife, do you do that by the date the knife was made, the alphabet or by maker? Set it up so that you can find the specific knife easily.

I group mine by maker. Sometimes a client asks for a specific model. In doing this by maker I only have to sort a "short list" rather than the whole schlemiel.

I would keep my celluloid away from my non celluloid. Inspect the cell often.

I don't know how much money your plans provide for, but there are some very nice display boxes (shadow boxes) that show up on fleabay on a pretty regular basis. Glass covered, with hinges and small compartments for each knife seems to be the way to go for storage with the ability to still show them off. That's what I'm trying, at least. I've got the display cases. Now I just need to some serious sorting and Ren waxing time. Best of luck!

Send them to me and I will sort and arrange them for you ::ds:: Seriously you should go thrugh them. Get them all out of the rolls and on the floor or a bed (king size) so you can look at all of them at once. arrange them by brand, pattern, handle material, age, etc. Try each then you will know what you like best
Remember there is no wrong way. Be prepared to spend at least an entire afternoon, or a day.
If you invite a knifer buddy to help you will get nothing accomplished, and have a wonderful time.

I sort all American knives by brand and my English knives by handle material. Other knives I divide by country of origin. This is mainly due to quantity of each sort. As I get more knives my sorting method evolves.
I measure my collection by the ton.

I find that to be true of my collection as well.
All organizational methods seem to have limitations at some point or other.
I have used knife rolls, but got too many knives. I still haven't found a method I am fully pleased with.

I have placed my knives by Maker in a Custom built 4 drawer case which holds up to 200 knives (pending size of knife).
I can go to any drawer to find what I want, works for me!
I use the knife roll to carry knives only. I plan on making some display cases so I can show off some on my finer knives when friends come to visit. Good luck on your collections.

Mike (hammillmc) I keep coming back to this thread to see if you said anything about separating the BONE from the CELLULOID.

I don't know how much you know about CELLULOID (cell) on knives but it often out-gasses, which means it starts a chemical break down that will eat that knife up eventually along with any knives around it...if not caught SOON. This hasn't been suggested as a way of separating your knives in group, but suggested to SAVE your knives from damage. I've popped the handles off 2 knives this past week that were out-gassing or I would show you a pic of them. Good luck on your venture!
