Maple Burl Hunter Custom

Post by Spectrum »

I have a small knife collection; mostly U.S. made folders, a few fixed blade knives
from Buck, Schrade and Camillus and a few custom knives like this one from a maker
named David Winston from Mississippi. He calls it a medium hunter pattern and the blade
is D2 tool steel and is 3 1/2 inches long. The handle on this one is stabilized maple burl
with black liners.
Mr. Winston has been making knives for more than 30 years and his skill and craftmanship
are apparent in his products. This knife balances well and the filework on the top of the blade aids in control of the blade.

Spectrum,

Not 100 % sure of this ..... may have read it somewhere, but I think Winston and Gene Ingram collaborate on knife materials, especially the blades. I think they are in the same neck of the woods.

REALLY a NICE looking knife there ..... do you use it in the field, and if so, I bet it holds a wicked edge ?

I have not used this knife since receiving it. I am certain that it will perform well; a member of another knife forum posted his experience with one of David's knives. He and several friends went on a guided elk hunt in northern Idaho. All the hunters were successful on the first day and one the guides borrowed his Winston hunting knife after ruining the edge on his own knife on the first elk. After finishing all the rest of the game animals taken the guide did not want to return the knife. "You know where to get another one, and I don't" was his reasoning. He ended up deducting the cost of the knife from his fees and th e original owner ordered another one.
