S&M WARRANTY ??? NOT SO MUCH.

The Queen Cutlery Company manufactured knives in Titusville Pennsylvania for 96 years. The company opened its only factory there in 1919 and commenced to make some of the best US crafted cutlery you will find. Unfortunately, the Titusville manufacturing plant closed down in 2018.

S&M WARRANTY ??? NOT SO MUCH.

Post by wazu013 »

I have a little problem with Schatt and Morgan's "Unconditionally Warranted" statement printed on the front of their boxes. I have a 2005 Sunfish that was never used. Just the other day I took it out to look it over and put another coat of Renwax on it. What I found were 2 pin crackes. When I called Schatt & Morgan I was told they could not or would not fix it for me.
Thank God for Muscratman. He feels he can fix it up without much of a hassle
I love the fit and finish of Schatt and Morgan but their warrannty is hit and miss.
Case still has the best warrannty in the business.

Not sure that a lot of companies warranty scale cracking because it can occur from where and how you store the knife, even more so on a 5 year old knife.
Sucks it happened tho, I love Schatt & Morgan. I would be pissed if it happened to me too!

Wazu......from the way the warranty reads, I would have to agree with you. (Faulty material)?

On one batch of knives I sent into Case they somhow lost them after the repairs were made. If my memory serves me there were 7 knives that needed work. Some of it was tang setting and the rest of them needed scales replaced. After looking everywhere for the knives they gave up and let me pick any seven knives out of their current catalog at the time to replace them.. As it turned out Case finally found the knives had been shipped by accident to another customer. Case collected them from the customer made sure the repeirs were done and done right then sent them all to me finished and cleaned. On top of that they let me keep the 7 new kniives that I picked out of their catalog. If Schatt & Morgan and Queen want to compete with Case they have a long way to go. Don't get me wrong I love Queen, Schatt & Morgan and all their allied products. Their quality fit and finish is as good as it gets. My point is Warranted Unconitionally is just that. Don't make a claim if you do not intend to back it up.

I've never really had any serious problems with Queen's customer service. They fixed a Case Classic knife for me once at no charge. I did send them a Queen made knife once that had composite handles that had a bad crack on one of the handles. It was a newer knife in the 1990's era. What I got back was the same pattern knife in mint condition, with better handle material, and it was a lot older than the knife I sent them. The only thing I didn't like was the knife I sent them had a long pull master blade and the knife they sent me back didn't have that. I figured I was ahead on that deal so I didn't complain. Over all the customer service was OK with me. I sure hate to hear that their customer service is lacking now days.

I wouldn't expect any knife company to hold to a warranty on a 5 year old knife......MHO
My definition of a unconditional warranty is not the same as a unconditional lifetime warranty.

Johnierotten is right. A 5 year old knife can have problems outside of any warranty. I sell a few knives every year. In fact I have bought and sold over 1000 knives on ebay and still hold a 100% rate. The people I bought the knife from were great. It was sold to me as New OLd Stock in 2008. At the time I told the seller about the problems and they refunded my money and told me to keep the knife. I think they did this because I bought 4 other knives at the same time. When I contacted the knife maker it was to get it repaired and I was more than willing to pay for the repairs. It seemed like a shame to have such a nice knife become a beat up worker. I was surprised that they couldn't rehandle the knife more than warrant it. They offered to repair the tang without question.
I think Shatt & Morgan and Queen are quality knife makers with fantastic products. They are in a tough market competing against a Giant to get their share. I will recomend them and buy from them without question.
Bottom line is I am sorry I didn't explain myself more clearly on this thread.

Wow...now that really surprises me.. ...If you were willing to pay....you would think that they would be more than happy to repair it. ::shrug::

I am very happy with Queens repairs. Not very many returned to start with... ::tu::
I had this S&M Dr.Carved Bone 2001 42266 XI with a crack in the handle. It took them some time to get the right bone to replace it with (color). Now she is one very sweet looking knife with out a crack. It was about only 2 mo.s ago I got her back. 2001 knife repaired in 2010 and FREE just for a crack.... ::ds::

In the original post you said you discovered two pin cracks when getting it out to clean it recently. But then you said you were discounted the entire price of the knife from the seller when you discovered the problems a couple years back. Is this two different knives?

If makers defects are present when you receive a knife, it is covered under nearly anyone's warranty. And most will cover nearly all issues for a very long time as long as they are not neglect. But if a knife does not have pin cracks when you received it, but develops them later, I guess there could be an argument that the conditions played a role instead of craftsmanship. Even at that, I have never heard of them declining to take a look at a knife; much less fix it for a fee.

Who did you speak with? I will follow up on this and find out just what is going on.
