Vintage Mother Of Pearl (MOP) Knives

The tang stamp is Parkin & Marshall XL ALL. In the early 1900s, the name and trademark exchanged hands a few times. They were first acquired by M Hunter & Son and then Needham, Veall & Tyzack. Given the period of production (circa 1920s-30s), I suspect the actual maker was the latter company. s-k

Made in England, sterling blade, hallmarked.

Threaded bolsters and nicely carved MOP handles.

Just think some woman engraved this little knife for what amounted to a few pennies per knife. The backside is engraved as well

You have to have talent or be an artist to engrave this stuff as well as this knife was done.

Today a custom knife maker would charge a small fortune to do a knife like this.

I believe the word Voule is French, and means "to want" Which means it could be a trademark name a certain company used.

Example; "Obtain" was stamped on the tang of knives made by Saynor, Cooke, & Ridal.

Just a possibility I am throwing out there

Aside from the different hallmarks it is almost identical.

What is the length of your knife? Another thing, my knife has brass liners and a steel uncovered backspring, Yours?

I have been scanning knives of late and I found this little barlow that we talked about way back on page 11. Mine is 2 inches long & has brass liners and an uncovered backspring also.

Its not as intricately carved as the butterfly engraved one that you just posted, but it is very pretty.

I just spent the last 1/2 hr looking at all the marvelous knives that have been posted here. It sure has gotten to be a large thread! I just wanted to thank you, Dimitri, for starting this one up.

For anyone that hasn't really looked lately, this thread is worth checking out again!

I tried to scan the knife tonight, but the scanner light reflects so much it kind of obscures the detail. The original photo on page 11 taken with a camera is much better.

Here is a Abram Brooksbank Sheffield "Defiance". I like the picture on the back of the tang. I guess its supposed to be a cannon, but I thought at first glance it was a ferris wheel. lol

This is an unused Ulster #246. The pearl is awesome. firey on both sides, no cracks, like new.

Here is a J.W. Billings Sheffield congress. All six blades are marked.

Nope, "XXL" isn't on the tang anywhere. All the blades have this stamp:

Ibberson, Sheffield. File worked back and Firth Stainless blades and spring, nickel liners with milled edges. Original pouch as well.
