Eye Brands

Post by Paladin »

:D Well, look here what I just found! Thank you Bryan. :D
Muskrat Man had told me he was trying to get this done, so my thanks to him also, he got 'er done!
This is a brand I have held in high regard since I got my first one. It was a gift from an aging neighbor and had belonged to her deceased husband. I must have cleaned and skinned several hundred deer with it by now.
I began seriously trying to put a collection together when I found eBay in about 1992. It was Eye Brand heaven for old Eyes back then.
Enough about me. I am going to post a picture of my oldest Eye Brand. Maybe we can get a little discussion going.

Very nice old eyes Ray! I regretfully sold my oldest eye, and probably my rarest recently on impulse. Here is a pic of it. I like the looks of that little stubby jack. ::tu::

Nice one Dr M. I am going to post a couple more I have. These are fairly uncommon knives in that they were part of an effort to introduce a line of Eye Brands that was made in Japan. I have no idea as to how many were made but they don't surface too often. Schlieper put the name EYE XL on them and I can only guess that those at Wostenholm didn't take it too well.

First,
WELCOME to the AAPK forum, Coondawg!!
It is almost always hard to make an age determination without a photo. But, what I can tell you is that Schlieper began putting pattern numbers, 99 in your case, on the tangs in 1979. The truth is, and as a general rule, I probably couldn't get any closer if I had a photo as Eyes can only be dated in a range of years. They are not like Case knives with their system of dots. There were a couple of years in the mid-1980s where they put the year into the etch, but other than that not much to go on other than tang stamps, shields and such. One other thing is that I know almost nothing about the newer Eyes, that being those coming in the late 1980s to present. :D

Coondawg,
If you have Eyes dating back that far, I would almost be willing to send you my camera for a look at them.
Please post them when you are able. 8) ::nod::

Can you guys tell me how old this eye is? The only other markings are on the blade itself that is faded. It appears to say "premium Quality" with another Eye on it

That tang stamp dates from the mid-to-late 1970s until 1981.

I have owned several of the "three eyed" German Eyes, key word being "have". I was never familiar with the age of these knives. Are the Eye brand knives older if they have 3 eyes on them? Approximately how old are they?
I may be sick when I find out the answer.

My grand dad always carried a German Eye. I guess that is why I like them extremely well.
