Pocket knife collecting

I was wondering what would be a good book to purchase about pocket knife collecting. I have been collecting Colonel Coon Knives for some time but know nothing about other brands. Thanks for the help

Hank.. ive never heard of a HOW TO COLLECT book....
However there ARE several price guide books out there..
Hec if you got a pile-o-COONS, ya dont need a book..

There isn't any one single book that is going to meet all your information needs regardless of what area of interest you have in knives. With that said, a book I find useful for its genereal information is "Blades Guide to Knives and Their Values". It has a broad range of information including a pretty comprehensive listing of knife manufacturers and wholesalers who have been in buisness through the years. There's also a section on the various pattern of folding knives that I found informative. There is information on grading knives by condition and about how to spot a fake.
If vintage knives are of interest to you, a virtual must have is "Goin's Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings". It is primarily focused on documenting the plethora of tang stamps that are out there on cutlery. It also has some interesting historical information about numerous knife companies.
Those are the two I find myself reaching for most often but there are many others that are also worthy of mention.

I don't think you can get by with any one book. I don't think you can have too many. There are usually some for sale on Ebay at any given time. I have to put in a plug for knifeaholic and say that his book on Case knives is 1st rate. It takes a lot of reading and experience to develop much knowledge on knives as a whole. Even then you have to watch out for the counterfeits. Gerald Witcher's book, Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery is a good one for that. This site is a great place to learn also.

I have over 70 knife related books on my shelf.
Have four more on my Santa wish list.
I have used them all to some degree in the past year.
Ya can't have too many!

You said it Paul. I have a bunch of books and keep picking up new ones when I come across one I like.Thats why I picked up two last time -traded it to denny already. Cant have too many is right.

Halfway thru realized the more I lurnt the less I knew.
So I spent my money on kanifes instead of books.

Depends on what you are buying.

If you are buying "New" knives from GEC, Queen, Case, etc. No big deal on the books.

If you collect "Vintage, Old, Antique" pocket knives. Big mistake

I may be out in left field here,but,i've collected a few different things in my life and think the only one making money is the guy selling the price guide.A knife or whatever you collect is only worth what someone will pay for it.
I like informational books and if a price guide is in it so be it.The optimal word is guide!!

I was able to find a deal on Levine's Guide to Knife and their Values, the coveted 4th edition, on ebay. It came up as a buy it now for 32.99. It was a bargain that I couldn't pass up & Bret got a nice Christmas present.

Is there any practical advantage in having the 2010 7th edition of "Blades Guide to Knives and Their Values" over the 2005 edition?
