Case XX Tested 62079 1/2 Counterfeit?
Help me with this one. This is a Case XX Tested sleeveboard pen 62079 1/2 with green bone handles. I bought the knife without looking at the tang stamp with a magnifying glass. The knife looks to me like it's original except for the tang stamp. Why would anyone do this?

The knife is probably good just someone tried to make it look older than it was so they could get more for it.

Sometimes you get the elevator and sometimes you get the shaft! I am pretty sure you got the shaft this time. Bummer!

I wouldnt say you "got the shaft" at all, depending on what you paid...
Steve said the knife is legit, less the fake tang stamp, and I for one love the green bone scales
Unless you paid something outrageous for it dont hang your head pal, just chalk it up to a lesson learned like all of us have done, learn from it, and move on

Maybe the tang stamp was cleaned off of the tang. These tested stamps were sometimes pretty light, maybe someone thought they could re-trace the tang stamp with a Dremel after cleaning and this was the result.

I agree, the knife looks to be in nice condition; with pretty scales for a tested era knife. But the redo on the stamp; has to be the worst attempt; I believe I have ever seen. I think msteele6 is right on; I think a counterfeiter would make a better attempt.

Thanks for all your comments. I will just chalk this one up to experience. Learn from it and move on. I will always use a magnifying glass before buying a knife in the future.

I wouldnt say a counterfeiter would have done better, considering the very bad excuses for fake knives they are coming up with on eBay. This knife is the real thing, correct handles, shield, and blades ( and very little wear on the blades to boot) it simply has been defaced. Whatever was done to scar up the lettering wasnt done to enhance its value or fool anyone, it was simply an effort to make a badly worn trademark appear more visable. It is also possible someone tried to "clean" the trademark with some sort of acid which was too strong and ate into the edges of the stamp. A good knife in my opininon, just "defaced".

Thanks for your comments and observations Road_Warrior. I agree with you. The knife is the real thing with the tang stamping defaced. It is a beautiful knife. What a shame..
