He is a very accomplished musician. I spent some time and listened to several of the things he did and the only one that suited my fancy was "Brakeman's Blues".

If Thile and Nickel Creek are new wave Country then Country Music root stock is Jimmy Rogers. I suppose you could say Roger's style was more Western (Wikipedia says " a “vernacular combination of blues, jazz, and traditional folk” to produce a style of music then called ‘hillbilly’") but I don't think anyone could argue his influence on the industry.

Jimmie Rodgers’s first Blue Yodel, which became known as “Blue Yodel No. 1 (T for Texas) ”, was recorded on 30 November 1927 in the Trinity Baptist Church at Camden, New Jersey. When the song was released in February 1928 it became “a national phenomenon and generated an excitement and record-buying frenzy that no-one could have predicted." By the 1930s yodeling was a widespread phenomenon and had become almost synonymous with country music. (Wiki)

I don't think I would qualify Thile's music as progressive Country, rather some sort of acoustic fusion, or acoustic jazz or some such, cetainly not Bluegrass or Country, he's just sort of out on a tangent all his own. Some of the Nickel Creek stuff did get vidio play on CMT early on. Again, great player.

They're not much at tellin' jokes but they play a mean guitar and banjo. I also like the fact that they're real life, down home, country boys. That floatin' fishin' shack is a hoot. It's like something my Uncle would have done if he'd thought of it.

Went to Shyler's Bar-B-Q in Evansville on Saturday afternoon for lunch. Almost makes me want to move back. I had heard a lot about Moonlite Bar-B-Q in Owensboro so last year when we were down, we gave it a try. My daughter loved it, it was a yawner for me.

What are you trying to say Jerry, you don't like that? Sure can't take anything away from their musicianship, great players. This was the early progressive Bluegrass that sprang up in the 70's. Ricky Skaggs had a band that played about the same called Boone Creek. This is the music that helped to keep Bluegrass alive and well.

I'm not the biggest fan The Judds ever had but I sure like this song. Maybe because it fits into my life so well. Born in 1893, my granddad was a man of strength, both physical and personal. He was a farmer and then after grandma died in '57, he sold the farm and worked on the roads with my uncle, the Township Road Commissioner, until he was well up into his 80's. Except when he had the shingles, I don't remember the old man ever being sick a day in his life. I have tried to emulate him and in my mind have failed in so many ways. He had integrity and his word was his bond. If he shook hands with you on something, you could be sure he would hold up his end. He was healthy and vigorous up until a couple or three years before he died in '89 at the age of 96. There are times when I miss him so much it hurts.Grandpa Tell Me Bout The Good Old Days

There's a banjo tune called "Ruebon's Train" or "Lonesome Ruebon" (both the same song), then the Osborne Brothers did a song called "Ruby, Honey Are Your Mad At Your Man" (same tune), both played in the key of D, then, someone else changed it to the key of B and called it "Train 45". I'll dig through YouTube and see if I can dig the three of them out. All three the same tune and the 1 - 5 progression.

Some of those old boys make it look so easy anyone could do it and others just are working their a__ off. I had never heard any of those songs and wouldn't have connected them if you hadn't told me. Amazing what you can do with a sound by just changing the key and/or time. Thanks T.J. This forum is always an education.

Bill Monroe's most famous song, "Blue Moon of Kentucky" never became a hit until a young fellow from Memphis, TN, Elvis Presley recorded it. Originally the song was slow and played in a waltz time all the way through. Elvis took it, sped the song up to double time and put it in 4/4. Monroes later version was a mix of his original and Elvis' version.

Not hardly Country and not even close to Bluegrass, but, OOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGG. This vid has ALL of my very favorite R&B and R&R heros. These guys are driving such a perfect energy groove that I'm not sure anyone could follow. Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, BB King, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, James Brown, etc. all on one stage at the same time. Put on your dancin' shoes and check this out.
