Why dose this knife have "BUCK" on the front handle

Buck has been making knives since 1902, the company was started and is still run by the Buck family.
Your knife is a stockman pattern, (you probably knew that) the shield just happens to have the company name on it, it's something a lot of companies do, such as Case, or Schrade.

I have many Buck knives, some made by Schrade, some made by Camillus - I even have some made by Buck in the USA and China. However....
My question is; out of all the Buck stockman knife in my collection: there is only one with the name BUCK on the shield.

He should know about that knife.

I just heard back from Joe Houser on the BUCK shield on Ken's knife.

Thats a funny story actually. Back sometime in the 1980's one of our marketing guys thought it would be better if instead of our regular shield that shows the hammer/knife/nail, we should change it to just say BUCK in big block letters. So we did that on the 305, 309, 303, and 301. We got so many complaints from customers who liked the classic shield that Chuck Buck told them to change it back! If I remember right, we only did this for a few years.

It looks like one done by Herman Williams to me.
That stag looks like the ones he does, he gets that unique coloration to the stag.

Sorry fellas, I was gone hunting or we would have been past this sooner.....

BUCK on the shield of the 300 series, occurred from 'about' 1986 thru 1988. You will find odd examples from 89. Also a very few in models other than the Buck made 301,303,309 and 305. I think Buck sent Camillus a few BUCK shields to finish a order run on those odd balls. Usually 307s and very rare 313s and 321s. I don't have a 321.

The BUCK shield IDs the first Buck factory made knives of those four models. Which began the close of the Camillus association. And began Bucks policy of date stamping all blades. However, it took an additional eleven or twelve years to actually stop all Camillus contract made Buck knives. These are mainly UN-dated special run models, made exclusively for SMKWs.

You will see them in used knives with the black ink rubbed off and only indentions of BUCK on the metal shield. Date codes will be <,>,^ and a very few V. All of the 'Buck' made models will be made of 425M steel, not too shabby of a metal for the times.
