Some smaller fixed blades..........

This little A.G. Russell is 6" OAL with a 2 1/4" blade. The sheath is heavy 1/8" leather and very pocket friendly. The knife is sharp as sin and handy as a pocket on a shirt. Now and then, I slip it in the hip pocket of my jeans in case I'm pressed into kitchen service and all that's in the knife drawer is a used up Ginsu.

For several years, Russell listed this knife in the middle of his catalog. Since I don't get the catalog anymore (apparently they expect you to buy something now and then to keep getting the catalog) I've searched his web site several times and don't find it so I'm guessing it's been discontinued.

I have one just like it that I've had for close to 20 yrs. or so...it's the Woodswalker. AG still offers them and has them in stock...$22.95 w/leather pocket sheath. A bargain in my book and one handy little knife, great for a bird & trout knife.

Well, there it is. I searched that web site over a couple of times and couldn't find that knife. I thought he had discontinued it but nope.

Here is one from this weekend's flea market.

The etch says: Queen Steel #B0404

The bolsters and pommel appears to be pewter.
I did some searching on line but didn't find much.
I did find the model number associated with a cutlery set, perhaps a steak knife, but the info on line did not have pics.

Does anyone know about this one?
Is it a Queen Steak knife?
Approximate date?

Orvet i can not answer your question, but i do know they made the same knife in a fillet version!

That would be a great Bird & Trout knife as well!
I sort of got steak knife stuck in my head when it was one of the few things I could find on that knife.

They would not be the only company to use a small fixed blade in more than one application.
The Gerber Miming was sold as a Bird & Trout knife, paring knife and in sets as steak knives.
I have some and they work nicely in all three applications.

I just have a Gerber Miming. This one mite be a factory prototype.
It came out in 1948 the year I was born.

Opies also easier on the plasticard than Barkies.
Here's a no.6 Ollie factory stock and then after I
applied the Wj 'Pocket Wore' treatment.



Now some may say this constitutes a thread hijack, altho a minor one.
Just remember an Opie with the verabloc welded in lock position makes
a pretty efficient & affordable small fixed blade.

Yes, they are aluminum and black plastic. This line was called "Black Beauty" by Western 8 different models, I believe.

I like these handles better than leather, they hold up much better, but they are cold to the touch in the winter

I have always liked the look of fixed blade with no guard. I have several of them!

When I was at Ed Fowler's place learning to forge, we would sit at meals and discuss knife design, every aspect to a knife we covered thoroughly! Ed stresses a good guard!

He's a working cowboy in Wyoming's high desert where he has his own spread. One day while moving some cattle he noticed a calf had gone through the ice on the Wind River that runs through his place. In an attempt to rescue the calf he found himself in the same predicament. He doesn't recall how many times he frantically plunged his knife into the ice pulling himself from the freezing water, but he was sure that without the guard he would have severed a finger or two. Later on his very sore and torn up little fingers revealed that fact.

I agree that a serious, hard working knife needs a guard. My GEC "Hunter" will most likely never see serious duty. I'm thinking somewhere between "Safe Queen" and kitchen slicing for this knife. I'm sure a working cowboy would laugh at calling this knife a "Hunter." I doubt my job as a college art professor will ever call for anything much heavier duty than a Case Peanut, so I think I'll be okay. I wear my shirt untucked most of the time, so I won't be able to carry the knife very often anyhow due to legal reasons.

Don't know if this falls into the "smaller fixed blades" or not, 8 9/16" over all, but still not a "Bowie" size. Helle HE30. Great knife, crazy sharp. I think it is from the 60's.
