Case XX Dating, Am I correct?

Have a Look at the "Regular Jack Knife" and see if I you think I am correct on the dating of this knife.

Info on the "6202 1/2" would be appreciated as well. I noticed four brass handle cover pins/nails on it. What clues does this give?

Hi Hawke,

I believe the description on the bottom knife is off just a bit. That one has a spear master blade, so the missing 1/2 is normal. The shield is pretty much the standard style used through most of the earlier xx era also. so.. it's not necessarily early 1940s IMO. Could be mid to late 40's just as easy. That is just my take on it, so take it for what it's worth

A lot of times bare-head (those with no rear bolster) knives have 4 pins. That's what I've noticed anyways. Nothing uncommon there.

Howdy Hawke,

Still just a bit off I believe. Check out the attached picture. This shield has a closed c. The one on your knife is actually an open C. If you compare them close, I think you will see exactly what I'm talking about.

I have been told, many times, over the years, that, as a rule, Case did not start putting pattern numbers on the back of XX blades, until 1949. True, or false?...

Hi CCBill,

I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong about this, but here is how I understand it...

I believe Case stamped some (not a lot as I understand it) pre- 1949 xx knives with pattern numbers.

I think 1949 is when they started stamping them with pattern numbers religiously. The reason I said the knife could just as easily be a mid to late 40s model (hesitated to say 50s or 60s) is because the rough black "plastag" material was discontinued in the late 40s or very early 50s ...right?

Thinking about it now; given that the knife does have a pattern number; I change my guess on the date of manufacture to between 1949 and sometime in the early 50s.

This is all just how I've interpreted what I've heard or read at various times; so as always... take what I say for what it's worth (not much).
