Here is another one of my knife overhauls. This one is also another project for our fearless leader Bryan Sanders. It is scrimshawed on both sides, the front side is the color scrimshaw and the back shows the dog chasing a rabbit. The dog belonged to the Sander's family and was named PUTNAM!

PS> I hope you fellers that like to file get a good look, this is an example of what I mean when I say it takes me time and is nerve wracking! Doing file work like this is satisfying but does give me a case of the nerves - not wanting to wreck someone's nice knife! If it was my own, well now, that would be a different thing. But when I work on other people's things, it is a must that they come out excellent.

I am looking for more people that would like me to do some custom work on their knives. I do all sorts of customizing. Please, take a look at my web site and, sign my guestbook!

I see you are up to your best, as usual. Great filework and I sure like a knife with scrimshaw on both sides. I can see that knife is one with a great deal of sentimental value. Great work!

I really like the location of the dogs head on the hump of the handle.
Kool Idea.

RealMontanan just a question for you.

Do you have any lockbacks photos ?
Where do you stop the file work on them ? or do you go all the way to the end ? I have seen both ways done.

Justold52 - I'm like you- I've seen them and done them both ways. Personally, myself I like to go all the way around to the end of the spring. Just my preference though. They look good both ways!

I received this knife a couple days ago. It really is very nice and I sincerely thank Colin for putting in the time to do such fine work. My dad owns the knife now. I gave it to him yesterday and he was thrilled and amazed.

My family always had a beagle or two around. This particular dog was extra special though. He was a relentless hunter and quite a character to boot. He's a real legend around here to our family and to most people who ever had the pleasure to hunt with him.

I killed my first rabbit over him and the total number he helped us get was countless.

All he cared about was hunting and he was the best hunting beagle I've ever seen. He preferred to go with us of course, but if that wasn't an option, he would go it alone out back on the railroad tracks. He'd be gone all day and when he came back he usually had much of the hide worn off of his nose.

There were times we would see rabbits escape into brush piles that were so large and entangled that we often had to try and convince him to give up the chase. He would not have any part of giving up though. He was going in no matter what. Often you would hear him barking clearly at first, and then you would hear his bark getting fainter and fainter as he struggled through. It sometimes reached the point you could hardly hear him anymore. It was sometimes frightening to me because I'd think he had to be stuck.

Soon the rabbit would break out of the brush-pile and a few minutes later the dog would finally emerge.

...Oh boy ... I think I got a bit off topic here. Sorry about that.

The knife is just great. Pictures do not do it justice.

I'm very pleased and so is my Dad.

Bryan ; That sure was a SUPER thing you did for your DAD and telling us about your KOOL dog but his name !PUTNAM! You must tell use WHY that name.

I too looked at that knife and had old memeries come to my mind of my old loved and missed dog.

Mr. Paterson well done I think you bring out the love for any one loveing dogs if they see you ART on this one!!

Yeah, I know sometimes it is open mouth insert both #11's......... I deserved that one and probably will never live it down. As embarrasses as I was then, it has faded some but not much.
