Identification needed on South American Presentation Knife

Hello everybody,
I came across this interesting piece at a garage sale yesterday and bought it if for a whopping $4. It appears to be a presentation knife from South America, maybe Brazil, and has a total length of 14-1/2" . The blade looks to be stainless steel and has a motif of gaucho life. The handles seem to be massive slabs of MOP with brass rivets. The circle mark on the blade reads Desde 1922, Inox, with a large "S" in the middle; beneath is etched V. Aires-R.S.. The obverse side has the name of the owner etched in the blade and what could be a company logo and L.M. DO Brasil (googled it but could not find anything). The sheath also has "S" embossed in the leather. It's missing the sharpening tool. The person I bought this from said he's had it for quite a long time and once belonged to his old college roommate, the son of a wealthy American tobacco plantation owner. Any ideas on what the heck I have here? Thanks much for any input.
