Case Sunfish ...Tang Corrosion and Blade finish?

This one is what appears to be an XX era toenail/Sunfish. Although the XX cannot be seen. This knife has heavy pitting on the both tangs, both sides. It is also internal because the walk on both blades is steady but really rough. Both blades have good tight snap with no side play. Million dollar ? How in the world can both blades above the tang be so nice, No pitting of any kind. I'm sure that the corrosive process just did not decide to stop at the top of the tangs. Looking carefully, with a loop, at the raddi between the tang and blade I can see no signs of welding, So I do not believe that new blades have been welded on.

What I do see is what appears to be grinding just above the raddi. This may sound crazy but does this sound possible?: Can the blades be ground in a fashion that removes material from the entire face of blades on both sides, say maybe enough to remove the pitting and be brought back to mirror finish?

I'm stumped but something is not right here

Whenever I see a knife like this one, that has shiney blades and corrosion on the tangs, I assume that the knife has been refinished without having been taken apart. I just think that the person doing the refinishing couldn't get his buffer any further up the tang. The good part about it is that the knife wasn't taken apart.

My thinkin exactly. If you had another one that you know has NOT been messed with, weigh the two. I guarantee the one pictured would be a tad lighter.

You don't do a clean job on a rustbucket like that with just a buffer. Most likely with a 2" belt sander with increasing finer grits with a buffed finish. The person who did it had to stay away from the tangs to keep what was left of the mark. Eric
