Hello friends,

Winchester new age knives are pretty cool, but don't really think Bluegrass makes any of these knives at all as I have been told they are just the middle men in the picture (correct me ::paranoid:: if I'M wrong?) ....It is my understanding that all the new age Winchesters are & have been made by Queen Cutlery, I like most of the Special Edition White box Winchester patterns that have natural handles only & truly think they are sleepers in the Hobby as for now!!!

Zeke, I'M with justold, why are you asking???

That's my understanding also Roger, Queen makes all the current Winchester patterns now and has for a while. Here is a nice place to look at and purchase some Winchesters.

http://www.crisnercutlery.com/ (Click on Misc) They are not cheap but not too high either... I have seen them resell for large amounts of money on ebay...

The knife pictured is what I plan on picking up next chance I get.. :D

Take care,

I heard that Bluegrass Cutlery made the Case Classics. Does that mean that Case Classics were actually made by Queen also? I also read in a magazine that the Winchester Reprodustions were made with the old dies. Does that mean that Queen has the old dies and uses them? I think this knowledge would be of interest to a lot of collectors.

It is my understanding that Case Classics were made by Queen under contract for Blue Grass... :D

Here are a few companies that Queen has made knives for:
NOTE: This does not mean that the entire line of a company's knives were/are made by Queen - ie. Queen was/is not the sole manufacturer. For example, Parker now has the Bulldog Brand Knives made in Germany, but there were three patterns made in the U.S. by Queen.

Schatt & Morgan (In-house brand)
Robeson (In-house brand)
Old Hickory (In-house brand, 1970's)
Bluegrass Cutlery
Case Classics
Winchester Reproductions
Moore Maker (established 1985. Matador, Texas)
Marbles (Marbles Safety Axe Co.)
NorthWoods (Marbles)
Scagel (Marbles)
John Primble
Bowie Corp.
Chris Tenney - Tenney Trading Co.
A.G. Russell
Cripple Creek (Blackjack)
Family Tree Series For Parker - Kinfolks, Platts, Standard Knife Company, Crandall
Bulldog Brand
Bowen Knife Co (1970's-1980's)
Bob White Cutlery (1970's)
Sargent/Sarco
Voyles Cutlery (1970's)
Kabar
Swanner Cutlery - Fairfield, Ohio
Sampson
Canal Street Cutlery, Ellenville, NY.
Browning U.S.A.

olderdogs1...

When you have a little time, try the search for Blue Grass.....for some interesting discussion.
I would agree about collector's wanting to know...but, it doesn't seem to work like that in the knife contracting business.

Another good reason for a great site like this one.

olderdogs1,

If you or others are wanting to know about who made the Case Classics, go to the Case Classic section of the forum & scroll down to ----> "Who made what" ....Its pretty long but hang in there & read the whole topic! ::nod::

Thanks Roger, I read the info on the site. The way the whole thing is kind of secret is what is surprising. I have emailed Dave Scott on Bulldogs and it is kind of like pulling teeth to get an answer although I know BGC doesn't owe me a thing and I appreciate the info I have gotten.
Thanks to you guys I am learning a lot. ::tu:: I don't live far from BGC and may venture there someday and do some inquirying on my own.
Thanks again,
Tom

Roger,
I was looking at a retail catalog today and noticed that a few of Winchester's knives were made in China. The ones with stag and bone handles ( like Sunburst's pic ) are USA, but a few are Chinese.

Hello mumblypeg,

Are you referring to the Yellow Boy Winchester knives being offered by the local modern day Hardware & sporting goods stores? ....These, I have seen & don't know anything about really except they have surfaced in the last months, I took a look at a few & they are made cheap ::barf:: & not worth your hard earned U.S.A. dollars!!!

The Olin Corporation licensed the Winchester name for overseas distribution quite some time ago. Fairly recently, the name has shown up on cutlery manufactured in China...especially in WalMart, after the death of Imperial Schrade. I'm pretty sure it is associatied with Fiskars/Gerber.

I have also heard that Gerber is connected to the distribution of these Winchester imports. I bought one of their slipjoints a while back and it wasn't worth the money I paid for it. If you look at the knife patterns, some are very similar to some of Gerber's imports. I'd stay away from the Wal Mart Winchesters.

I have a few of the Bluegrass Cutlery Winchesters and am very pleased with the quality of all of them. In fact, right now I am trying to put together all 12 of the abalone releases from the Turn of the Century Millenium edition. The toothpick is gonna be a BOOGER to get ahold of.

Zeke, the American made Bluegrass releases (like the others, I bleieve they are produced by Queen) are pretty darn good. They have carbon steel blades as far as I know and therefore will have to be cared for properly.

The cheaper big box store editions of Winchester knives are all made offshore, just like the cheaper Gerber, Remington, and even Buck knives. If you want to carry one if your pocket for use, then by all means get one that you like. If you expect them to go up in value, well, I don't know if that will happen.

I can tell you that one of my carriers (recently I sold it) was a Steel Warrior saddlehorn. It came shaving sharp right out of the box. The only knives that I have ever had that came that sharp were the Steel Warrior, a Kershaw, and an SOG. You could get 5 Warriors for the price of either the Kershaw or the SOG.

I guess all I am saying is find something that you like and learn all that you can. Branch out from there. I haven't found anything that I like more than any other so I have some of a lot of things. But do start with some good books. Also, this website has lots of information. Use the tools at hand and arm yourself with information. Get to any local knife shows to see the whole range of what is out there. Locally, there aren't any knife shows near me but there are usually a few knife folks at the gun shows. Ask questions both here and there. Knife folks generally are a friendly lot.

Good luck in your collecting.
