case XX stockman questions

Post by cbnutt »

i have 2 almost identical 6318 XX stockmans, i was curious over the years if there were slight changes made, i was comparing the 2 and started to notice a few things, nail nick on clip blade on one is mabe a a inch or so from the point end, other is a ways back up toward the tang end more so, shields are a little differant sizes, the XX,s on the tang stamp are slightly differant, by that i mean the angle i guess you would say of the lines in the X,s , both have the pattern stamp, so i guess it puts them past 1950 probly, handles apear close to identical, i was just wandering during differant periods did they mabe place nail nicks differantly, shields, etc.... i dont think either is fake, but was just curious, thanks.............:)

I would have to see pictures of your knives but there were indeed two distinctly different clip master blades used on XX era 18 patterns - a "regular" clip and a "California" clip - oddly though there were not separate pattern numbers for the two 18 blade variations unlike the 47 pattern where the standard clip model was the 6347 and the California clip model was the 63047. With the 18's both variations were made but they were never cataloged separately or numbered differently. If you have my book I show examples of both variations in the 18 pattern section.

Case tang stamps often looked different on different knives even from the same era.

In the modern era there have also been pattern 18
stockmans w/both california clip and regular clip.
I happened to notice the regular clip on a pocket worn old red.
I PM'd LC Stockman about it and he in turn sent a PM to Lisa
Boser-Miller at W.R. Case & Sons.
She did some investigating and found that the 6318s in
the pocket worn series did have the regular clip.
This includes the PW old red, navy blue, and natural.
There are also some R5318 with the regular clip,
Item nos #01703, #01713, #0718.

Exclusive 6318 with regular clip are:
#70778 Sears Power & Hand Tools PWNB
#98786 SHC pearl premiere PWOR
#02121 RJ Reynolds (thru Zippo) Burnt White Rogers jig
w/Zippo Camel Lighter.

During this process they also realized the catalog pics of
the PWOR 6318 show the incorrect California Clip Blade.

Quite a ripple effect (imho) just from asking LC if he had
ever seen an 18 w/a regular clip blade before.

Hope this helps.
