New to Knife Collecting.........

I just started actively collecting pocket knives in the last few months. I have a ton of questions and have already learned a lot by just reading old threads here.
Does anyone have any good advice for a rookie collector ? What would be some good knives to get that you guys think may go up in value over the next few years ? I have been looking at some of the Vintage Case knives, would that be a good place to start ?

Because of my lack of knowledge and the number of conterfeit vintage Case knives out there, I would stear clear of Case. Don't know what to tell you to collect except be sure it's something you like. Know this doesn't help much but it's just my opinion.

Bought this Red Delrin from Deadwood, I wanted a German Kissing Crane before they were gone and the Chineese invaded.

Thanks Tj, I don't have many either, this is just my second one, The other I traded my dad for, I gave him a new Henkels for his old Broken KC. But I wouldnt take anything for it, since it was his.

My words of wisdom for a novice collector would be; to invest in a few good knife reference books, and secondly, to attend some knife shows.
I think TJ gave good advice on staying away from vintage Case until you get your "feet wet".
I have been collecting for 40+ years, and I'm still amazed at how much I don't know!

Tennessee, Look into some books there are many good ones. You can get good Case books
if you do want to collect Case. Knife World is a good source and also good monthly reading material. Take it slow Good luck!!

Could someone recommend a good cleaning solution for my knives that will really protect them and make them shine ?
Will furniture polish work ? or will it hurt them ?

Imo, GEC knives offer a wide variety of patterns and are great quality knives made right here in the good ole USA

Also they will hold there value and will, as you say, "go up in value over the next few years."

GEC can be a bit pricey though

Howdy TN, and It's my opinion that successfully collecting knives as an investment requires a whole lot of knowledge and a little bit of luck...or vice versa! I cant give you much advice since I just collect knives that I enjoy for my own pleasure, which for me mostly means they don't cost too much. But you've come to the right place for sure. Lots of really knowledgeable collectors around here!

As a new and maybe novice collector of pocket knives I will make the suggestion of patience .... meaning unless it is an absolute one of a kind, can't live without it type of knife ...... wait, think it over and as others have mentioned do your homework, reference the right materials and gain as much knowledge as possible. By taking the attitude of patience you will usually find the " same " knife at a lower price. Don't be afraid to ask if the price can be lowered either ..... worst that can happen is someone says NO.

Hey TN,
I'm more of a novice than you are. I got bitten with the collecting bug when I found an old case my dad must have bought between 1965-1969. B4 that I had a small selection of pocket knives (mostly EDC's) for different occasions. I've been buying a few new case knives because I'm interested in case but don't have the knowledge to buy anything vintage yet. I 've been reading all the books and mat'ls I can find to gain some insight. This site has also been very educational too. I don't mean to highjack your thread but I'd like to ask people's opinions on collecting new case knives or other new US made knives. Thanks and good luck finding some good ones.

Try searching the completed listings, that will be the best guide to ebay prices.

WHAT'S IT WORTH?

Average knife prices on eBay can be looked up pretty easily.
I have no idea of the time frame this "what's it worth" search covers
Is it a ten year average or a one month average?
The more specific you are the better the results will be
Type in "Case knife" and you will find an average of around $46
Type in "Case trapper" and you will get a different result
It's kinda fun!

Well I am somewhat biased but my father (bigo227 on ebay) is a very knowledgeable and honest seller/collector. He has been involved in vintage case knives for over 50 years. He has known Jim Sargent and Tony Foster for many years. He got me interested in collecting a few years ago and has taught me a lot about vintage case knives. Welcome to a great hobby, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

What's you guys opinion on this knife ? Does it look original and un-restored ? the model # on the Tang looks like the six is incomplete, Is that normal ?

That is a nice knife, it is fairly common for tang stamps to wear from opening and closing the blades. Also 54rodgers is a very reputable seller. Sargents 7th edition shows $45.00 mint for the knife.
