Soakin a knife in Coca Cola or Pepsi to clean it

I have never done this but I want to try it .
I recently read it on a thread and went back through a bunch but couldnt find it.
Can someone give me so help on this process. like How long? Any scales not recomended?

Just drink the Coke, gino (a cold one works even better )
Then take some Greased Lightning and a tooth brush to it

I don't know if I'd want any sticky sugar syrup residue hiding in any inaccessible nooks and crannies,myself.Might be hard to rinse out from,say,between the liner and scale.

They say Coke will eat up a copper penny if you leave it in the coke overnight.
Nickel silver and brass both have copper in them.
I think I would be very leery about leaving a knife in Coke or Pepsi, but I have never tired it.
I think if I were inclined to try it, I would use a junker knife the first time.

Coke has phosphoric acid in it. But the water in the Coke (or other cola) is likely to rust your blade.

Actually it is the carbonated water in the Coke that removes grease film or some rust . Try using club soda instead since it doesn't have the sugar and other mysterious ingredients which may gum up or otherwise harm your knife . Be sure to use sodium free club soda .

The phosphoric acid in cola neutralizes any alkaline deposits build ups, but that's about it! Any other properties of the soda are not useful as a "cleaner" at all, you get more of a sticky mess than anything else. Now substitute baking soda and a little water for the "soft drink", and you will get the same result without the mess !

It's kinda like that old vinegar and baking soda volcano we made for the schools science fair

Now I have used that old "Pepsi trick" to clean up the battery terminals on cars before, but you still get that "sticky mess" if you don't wash it away after the chemical reaction has stopped!!

Diet Coke isn't sticky and it still have the phosphoric acid and Carbonation!

Drink the coke , while its soaking in W-D 40. The longer it soaks, the more it helps.

The way I understand it, it does not clean any rust or crud off. It just gives it an even patina, and MAY prevent rust from forming afterwards. I tried it on an old Imperial. cleaned all rust and crud off, then dipped blade only, in for a couple hours. Gave it a decent look, and it hasn't rusted yet. But it is an unnatural sort of look.

Sounds like the look my carbon steel GEC knives have after I cut a tomato or something with and don't clean the blade soon enough.

I tryed it on a rusted knife, didn' work so well, didn't clean the rust at all after two days. On a case tested with buffed blades I tryed distilled white viniger, and five hours later a type of false patina formed on the knife, kinda looks so so, but better than the buff job. There is a preveous post on this, I also soaked it in baking soda and water to neutralize the reaction, then rinsed and oiled, wax, ect. The false patina or reaction is a strong bond, so be sure you want it there, but faster and cleaner than coke, or pepsi. Still had to find out for myself.

Diet Coke isn't sticky and it still have the phosphoric acid and Carbonation!

I was happy to see that the AAPK booth put my Diet Coke theory into action at the Blade Show!
