Hey PA Knives. I see you're an Ol' Yankee like myself. You're out there were it get's colder than a Mother-In Law's Kiss in the wintertime. I'm from Mechanicsburg, PA. (Harrisburg Area). I started collecting knives about a year and a half ago. I have one knife that relates to PA. It's the 300th anniv. knife. Lately, I've become really interested in the Case Classics. They are some of the finest knives I've ever seen. They are kinda expensive but they are knives you'll keep for a lifetime. If you get a hold of Ol' Roger, he'll get you started in the right direction.
Have you ever been to the Case/Zippo Visitor's Center or the factory? I've been to the Visitor's Center but not the factory. The center is really nice but I'm told that the factory is more interesting. Well anyway, have fun collecting. Your Ol' Yankee Neighbor, Ivan ([email protected])

HEY,

You need to join this group. Us Pennsylvanians need to stick together. I lived near Bradford for many years and was a regular at the factory and visitors center. For any of you that love knives "NOT JUST PA KNIVES" you won't regret going there. With the changing of the leaves it is a great time to visit. The Indians in nearby NY have opened a Casino too and this could make for a great vacation. Go win money and buy knives WOW! Oh and bring the wife too ::tu::

PA Knives

Hello everyone-- just thought I'd check in and see what was happening in here since I last visited. I am one of those that just sit back and read everyone's comments, and try to learn something from them. I have learned a lot. I just started getting into this knife collecting business--through an inherited ton of knives. I figured I better learn what I got, so I started researching. That's how I came across this site. I think its the best by the way. Still have some catching up to do-- just wanted to say thanks for all the info you all are supplying. Its really helping me out. :D
By the way, most of my knives are Case and Remingtons.

Philedalphia Souvenir

Post by smiling-knife »

Hi PA knives. I don't have any knives (other than Case) made in PA. I do have this old souvenir knife from Philadelphia. It was made in Germany and looks quite old. I have a similar one from the ST. Louis world's fair in 1904 so I place it about the same time. I hope this is of interest to you.

HI!

Acutually this knife is associated with Pennsylvania, not only due to its handle stamps but the manufacturer in Germany set up an import business with a firm from Philadelphia. I beleive the blades are stamped "D. Peres" ?????? let me know if I am right or not. I have seen a number of examples of this knife on ebay. All were used to advertise an event of structure, usually in the PA , NY or NJ area. That would explain the proximity also. Nice knife.

HI!

I will check my books at home, but I beleive that the barrel stamping is older. I have a pearl handled knife, no bolsters with the same stamping and it was earlier too. I'm thinking turn of the century but the pictures on the knife itself would help to date it in particular.

You folks know I'm no ace at older knives...but, I do enjoy the research.

I believe the Delaware Bridge officially opened on July 1, 1926...so maybe that helps a little in dating the knife with the Bridge (are there 2 different knives, or just obverse and reverse?).
http://www.drpa.org/drpa/drpa_history.html

S-K, what you see as a "Cross," is, I believe, a "Tap" for the ale barrel...time to hit the pubs?.

The late Mr. Goins' fine book says that Daniel Peres has been in business in Solingen since 1792. It appears as though the ale barrel was adopted as a mark circa 1885.

The Magnetic Cutlery Company of Philadelphia, PA. imported knives made by D. Peres. Maybe others, as well??

Hope this is of some value.

Nice knife or knives, if there are two... ::tu::

Just one

Post by smiling-knife »

Hi all. There is just one knife with the photos of the two sides. Barrel with a tap... that certainly make sense for a German knife. Thanks for the dating on the Delaware bridge. That does 'scupper' my hypothesis re turn of the cent. Thanks. :) s-k

Delaware Bridge History

Post by smiling-knife »

El Lobo had this one pegged ::tu:: . Here is a little snipit from http://www.scripophily.net/delporaut.html.

1921 -- President Warren G. Harding signs legislation authorizing construction of the bridge. January 6, 1922 -- Bridge construction begins. Presiding over the ceremony are Pennsylvania Governor William Sproul and New Jersey Governor Edward I. Edwards.

1923 -- The Joint Commission rejects the name "Franklin Bridge" and official designates the structure as the "Delaware River Bridge."

July 1, 1926 -- More than 25,000 people attend the official opening ceremony of the Delaware River Bridge. Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot and New Jersey Governor A. Harry Moore preside. After the ceremony an estimated 100,000 people (including an 87-year-old Civil War veteran in full uniform) walk across the bridge before it opens to vehicular traffic. The following day, President Calvin Coolidge arrives to dedicate the bridge.

Who knew it would be so educational. :) s-k

I just picked up an old cokebottle which looks like it was made by Union Cut but it is marked with a watchtower or lighthouse on the front tang and Tidioute, PA on reverse. Any Idea who made it and what the icon represents? Thanks

PA, my Dad got me interested in looking for Wolfertz knives. I've only got one, a 3 blade pearl whittler in real nice condition. What do you know about this manufacturer? Thanks.
