Xmas for Dad

Here's one of the presents I got my old man for xmas.He's 68 yrs old and loves Case knives.I hope he likes it.
I ordered it fromt XXcutlery,They did A fine job engraving his name on it and super fast delivery.

Thanks Bill,..Yeah,I was wanting to go but I just recently took over a mobile home park and its keeping me pretty busy.so it looks like I probably won't get to.Got a lot of trees to trim and landscaping to do and the only time I have to do it is on the weekends..

It must be real nice haveing a DAD that you care about.

I rember one of my SUPER Christmas gifts form my dad.
It was a Remington 22 rifel. When I left home to make room for my brothers and sisters (at age 17, 8 kids in all and I being the oldest boy) could not take it with me. Then when the youngest boy was 21 dad told me if I wanted the 22 rifel yet I had to pay him $50.00 or he would give it to Tim.
O well I payed him and still have it too.

I remember when I was a kid,me and my sisters would run around with a list of things we wanted for xmas.It was always a page and a half or 2 pages long.Being in and out of the hospital(we all 3 have cystic fibrosis)my parents were always scraping and pinching every penny they had,so my father would tell us the story of the only xmas gift he ever got. When he was six the school nurse came around to give shots,of course being a kid he ran and cried.She promised him a gift if he would let her give him the shot and not cry.He had never had a xmas gift so he let her.She gave him a wooden train that you pulled with a string and that was the only xmas gift he ever got as a child.After that I would always shorten my list to 1 or 2 things instead of the dozen or so that I had.
My father is the youngest of 13 and being tobacco farmers in KY his parents(my Grandparents)only had money at one time of the year and had to use it for shoes and clothes. I love my parents dearly!

Very nice stories guys. I would love to get my dad a pocket knife for Xmas, but he's already got the one and only knife he wants. Last year for his birthday I got him a Boker made Russell GRW small barlow with smooth red bone handles and carbon steel blades. Nice little knife, and it cost about $30 new. Well after he carried it for about six months it fell out of his pocket one day and it was never found. I told him now that we know he likes to carry a pocket knife (he didn't before) he should get something a little nicer and more interesting. I gave him a series of loaners so he could test drive them and determine what he wanted. Well he seemed very non-plussed with everything I gave him and pretty soon he said what he'd like is another red bone Russell barlow, exactly like the one he lost. So, that's what he got and that's what he carries.

I'm thinking of getting him a decent set of kitchen knives, since he always brings his apallingly cheap and crappy ones over for me to sharpen. I think the blades are made of forged paper clips or something. I figure I could get him a set of Old Hickory kitchen knives and still have enough left over to get him a shirt or something.

Kitchen knives.....think Forschner...best reasonably priced knives on the planet.

That's good advice. Low maintenance is the key with this guy, so carbon steel kitchen knives (like Old Hickory), probably not such a good idea.

longbeachbum ; after reading the nice thing you did for your dad that did not care for pocket knifes at all.

And then he lost it.

Tells me 2 things.
First he is old and set in his ways RIGHT. (you showed you love him and turned his old brain around to liken knifes).
Then you tryed to replace it with more costly knives RIGHT.( he is one not to show off what he has I bet as far as $$$$ goes).

Now you are thinking of replaceing his knives he brings to you the sharpen. Ask your self first does he do this cuse he loves you to do some thing for him that he knows you like doing? Who sharpened them befor you? If you try to replace his OLD ones will he even use them ? make sure they are NOT the BEST ones in the world ($$$) if you do get them.

I just adding my thoughts about OLD dads
I use to say OLD people are funny in the way they think. Now I know more cuz I too am old. THEY REALY DO THINK MORE.

Hey Justold,

Thank you for the nice comments. If I get him new kitchen knives, he'll still need me to sharpen them. I just won't have to go crazy trying to get a decent edge on gummy soft steel

. Those Forschner knives El Lobo steered me to are very reasonalbe, and shouldn't offend my Dad's spartan sensibilities. Thanks again for the advice.

Our host sells them in his store very reasonably as well.

Many older folks I've worked with on setting up kitchen cutlery, really like the Fibrox handles. Easy to grip, and not "slippery when wet." Voted best value by Cook's Illustrated, I think I've put 15-16 folks in Forschner (Victorinox) knives and never had a complaint.

Good luck with whatever you chose for your Dad.
