Goins Encyclopedia of Knife Markings

Anyone have the second edition of Goins Encyclopedia? Does it contain all the same information as the first edition with additional information or, is the first edition the better of the two? Thanks

Glad you all were interested. I checked amazon.com and the 1st edition prices range from $100 - $200. Is the 1st edition like a collector's item or something. It seems that with all the added information the 2nd edition would be a much better value at $34 including shipping. Anybody have any thoughts on the ranges of pricing?

Gee, that's nice to hear. I have a 1st Edition autographed by both the Goins. Bought it from them at their table at a Knife Show years ago. Have no idea, at the moment, where we were.

Of course, just because they're listed on Amazon for that kind of money doesn't mean they sell for that.

John Goins is deceased. I doubt anyone will ever expand on his work.

Hey TJ,
GENERALLY speaking, 1st edition books are valued more than later editions. Probably for the same reason Case ten dots are so popular, and 1964 1/2 Mustangs!
Don't know if that is the case in this SPECIFIC example with GOIN's, but I would say that an autographed, 1st edition book - made for COLLECTORS, probably is now or will be in the future worth more than later editions.

I gotta get a copy of that book ...

Mine has copyright 1998 but I don't see any designation of which edition it is.
Usually when I'm looking for one tang mark I get distracted by some of the others before I reach the first one.
Only other reference book I have is Pfeiffer's Case book.
Think both of those will be enough to keep me busy rest of my days.

Firstly; TJ, your little Coca Cola knife dates from 1930, according to Goins. When you get your book, you can find your knife on page 62.

Secondly, I misspoke about the earlier of my two copies being signed by John and Charlotte Goins. Actually, it's the newer 1998 edition that is signed.

My older book is in storage, so I cannot look at it, but I don't think I have two signed copies.

Thirdly, we are all incorrect about Goins "1st and/or 2nd editions". Goins first book was a small, self-published book called The Pocketknife Yearbook. It came out in 1972. His second book was Pocket Knives, Markings, Manufacturers and Dealers, published in 1979. The Second Edition: Pocketknives, Markings, Manufacturers and Dealers was published in 1982. The first Goins' Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings was published in 1986. It was a much expanded version of all the books that had preceded it. It quickly sold out, as had all the other books. The 1986 version was reprinted by popular demand in 1994, and that sold out as well. The current version of Goins' Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings, a compilation of all that preceded it, was published in 1998, as stated above.

All that is detailed on page iii of the 1998 edition.

So, the most recent book is not really the 2nd edition and that's probably why it is not identified as such on the title pages.

Thanks a lot Charlie. 1930, I guess that qualifies as vintage, maybe even antique. Now all I have to do is to get one of our knife doctors to put it back together. I guess the reason I called it the 2nd edition was because that's what Knife World Publications called it. I guess it really doesn't matter, 1st, 2nd, no edition, I'm still eager to get it. Have you looked in the bathroom, hanging from a towel bar, for your older copy of Goins? Thanks again for your efforts, they're appreciated.

Did you all get your copies of Goins? They sent me the wrong book. They sent "U.S. Military Knives, Bayonets and Machetes Price Guide" 5th edition by Silvey, Boyd and Trzaska. Put the right one in the mail today, I hope, and let me keep the price guide.

TJ you got me all excited too!!!! My goins is practically falling apart, it gets alot of use. I have noticed things out of place and stuff not there occasionally, but it's value far out weighs that!

Edgy is right the Second edition is the 98 edition. The first edition was 1986. You can read this in the Introduction.

All that stuff Robeson said too - I guess that makes the 98 version not technically the second edition.

If there is a 2010 edition someone tell me, I think I am confussed now too!

I got my Goins, copyright 1998, in the mail yesterday, May 24. Haven't had a chance to look through it yet.
