Okay...it's here, now what do I do with it, damaged Schrade

I was perusing that well known auction site when i saw this Schrade-Walden that hadn't been bid on. I placed a minimum bids thinking it wouldn't work but it did. I now own this one and am deciding just what to do with it.



The leather washers that remained looked to be in good shape and I thought at first to replace the missing leather with either more leather washers and dye them to match or adding a spacer material. I held the knife firmly in one hand and applied a little twist pressure to see how tight the washer wear and several literally crumbled. very rotten leather. As you can see the scale rust under the leather was bad.



I cleaned it up a bit and will clean it up further before adding a new handle.



Now time to choose handle material. I thought about all new leather...boring. Wood? I dislike wood scales and handles for the most part...has to be really different to interest me. Stag? Why yes, stag would be nice. I now have this Sambar stag roll on the way.



The blade itself is in excellent condition and the sheath is very usable. More when the stag arrives.

Sounds like a plan. Sometimes these kinda projects (unplaned ones) turn out to be the best. Look foward to seeing it when your done -I bet it will be awesome! That stag would look sweet on that balde.

I would definitely opt for the stag.I have one of those and the blade is full but the plating is coming off and rusting underneath.I got it very cheaply(sans sheath)so it wasn't a big deal.I cleaned it as best I could and then tossed it in my drawer.Seems to hold a pretty decent edge.

This has been a thing that I have had a hard time with. Perhaps others had this same problem.

How do you pick out nice stag?

I see lot of nice rolls to buy, but what will they look like when done?

Color and smooth or ground down parts? How much do you buff down in the stag? Do you die it first?

If any one has photos of a roll that they used and have the knife done. I would like to see some side by side to help us decide on what we want it to look like when we are done or have some one do it for us.

Show us the roll then show us the finished knife. That would help me most.
