My Favorite Edged Item and ii's not even a Knife.....

Post by ole_muddy »

I picked this thing up several years ago and have grown to like it more and more. It's not a real hatchet but rather a wallhanger to express an attitude. It is made of cast iron and is a full-size hatchet. I would date it to the neighborhood of 1900-1919 when the Prohibition movement was gaining steam and there were numerous cast iron wallhanger hatchets produced to advocate it and they had the similar profile bust of Carrie Nation but the handle read, "Cut Out The Whiskey". This one, instead, expresses an anti-Prohibition attitude and says "All Nations Welcome But Carrie". I've never seen another like this and they sell repros of the other kind on ebay regularly. Enjoy looking, Eric

That's a nice one Muddy. I collect old cast iron stuff - mostly old foundry advertisements and giveaways. Amazing how many ashtrays and bottle openers are among that group. You know what they say about foundrymen and alcohol...
I've seen some of the repros of the other type that you mentioned, but it looks like what you have is the real deal. The wear/tarnish marks on that piece looks like it was actually hanging in a bar somewhere.
Now if you ever think about selling it...

Carrie Nation was born only a few miles from where I live. (In Garrard County, Ky.) Her family home is still there but has fallen into quite a state of disrepair. There is a road named after her, Carrie Nation Road.
