Is the #23 Primitive Transition 2006/2007 considered a 2006 or 2007?

Is your #23 River Valley a straight 2006 or a Transition 2006/2007?

They had extra 2006 stamped blades left over and added a 2007 to the stamp. They are transition knives - that's what Bill Horn told me. I think they counted them as 2007 knives in GEC's production totals.

Oh, in that picture I see a #23 bark moss green, 1 of 26 and a Primitive Bone #73, 1 of 36 all from 2006. I remember discussing these knives with him way back when.

In 2006 the Northfield Pioneer had a production total of 244 knives. When the 250 limit was reached on some models they stopped putting serial numbers on and stopped putting the 1 of 250 etch on the spey blade like this Tidioute in Chocolate Bone in this picture. Even though the Tidioute Pioneer had a production total of 210 knives there are some without serial numbers. I have it in serialized and unserialized and I think anything from 2006 that does not have a serial number is very rare. I have 5 different 2006 knives that do not have serial numbers. They did not make it to 250 knives on most.

If I remember correctly, I purchased my Casein (available from the first open house) and about a week later the transition knives in River Valley Green and Primitive Bone came out. About another week later the 2007 knives came out and the first one I got was a River Valley Green 2007 - same as the transition knives except the tang stamp. I believe they were selling 2007 knives well into 2008, but it looks like they are tracking better with the dates now.

I was talking to Bill Horn back in 2007 sometime and the transition knives may have come to be because of a conversation between Bill Horn and Ken Daniels if memory serves me correctly - which I admit could be faulty. I would need to talk with Bill to see if my memory serves right.

What numbers should the caseins be? I bought it directly from Ryan Daniels over the phone along with some open house acrylics that I ended up selling.

The serial numbering system was different in year 1. They were numbered per pattern , rather than per each particular handle material. They wouldnt have been numbered 1-11 nessesarily,unless they were the first 1-11 made in that pattern.I think its right myself.Justolds is #217 i think,and j5's is 212.

yes my casin is ser#212 they only did 11 with casin out of the 250 that was made in that patern

Yes, in the Great Eastern pattern 23 they only made 227 knives - they never reached #250 according to Great Eastern Cutlery's web page 2006 production totals. http://www.greateasterncutlery.net/gpage.html Check it out and add them up. It should be 228 knives rather than 227, because they only list 10 knives for the Casein Model 23 rather than the 11 that was widely reported.

Since #213 is between #212 and #217 - I'd say #213 was correct. The rarest knives of all for 2006 would be those that do not have serial numbers because very few Brands/models actually reached 250. But - I do have a 2006 Tidioute Chocolate Bone pattern 23 with #250 and another with no serial number even though Tidioute only lists 210 knives for 2006. They are on the previous page.

Can you imagine someone trying to explain this 100 years from now? I did not realize that, but I didn't start collecting them till they came out with the 25 pattern in 2008. I do like how they have very accurate production totals listed !!

I think many of us know these are the most special knives being made today! IMO

Thanks, man. This is maybe my favorite knife. I have fancier, more exotic ones, but I am most comfortable with this. Plain jane but tough as nails. A lot like a wooden sodbuster with a bolster, really.

Sorry Hukk. Hate to burst your bubble but you burst mine . I also have a 2006 #73 stag with no serial# and spey etch and I was thinking the same as you. So something is screwed up with these numbers. Just when you thought you had it figured out.
