Help Wanted!! Is this Queen City Gunstock Legit??

I ran across this old Queen City knife that was recently listed on ebay. It looks pretty good to me but I'm looking for opinions on the knife about its legitimacy. I'm wondering about the tang stamping and the lack of a stamp on the small blade plus the lack of a shield. Comments, opinions, ideas are surely welcome on this one. Thanks, Eric

I really dont know, but it looks ok. I'm thinking most Queens are only stamped on the main, and alot were lacking a shield, but you'd think the fancy Gunstock pattern would have a shield.

Hello, as always I personally just give my opinion(right or wrong) and I definetely don't want anyone to get offended. I am a very picky knife collector--so some things that dont look right(i will not have in my collection). I don't feel this knife to be correct--the tang(master) has been severely altered(shaved) and one part of the bone next to its respective bolster has got alot of filler(probably was not cut to fit it nicely). thx Mark

If you need a definitive appraisal to prove its authenticity or lack of authenticity, then you can send pictures to Bernard Levine for an appraisal for a reasonable fee. The legitimacy of this knife is questionable just because it came from Myrtlefaye. He might want to appraise the Catt., too. Definately, I would try returning it to Myrtlefaye thru EBay channels by filing a claim & getting a full refund (instead of re-selling it).

Thank you Roger. I went to ebay and checked it out and since the knife has myrtlefaye in it's heritage it becomes an automatic pass. Eric

Myrtlyfaye has put up a lot of older QUEEN CITY marked knives. Like this one the blades seem to be possibly authentic older Queen City blades but not fully finished - like they came out of the factory before assembly and finishing. Many old factory parts have showed up that way in various hoards that have been uncovered.

If a counterfeiter was going to actually go to the trouble of restamping blades he would probably use a more desirable tang stamp - not to knock Queen City marked knives but they are not high $$. So I think these could be real blades but not original to that frame.

Another clue is that Schatt/Queen on the older knives would always put the master blade in front on a two blade jack. Not many companies did it that way but Schatt/Queen, Union/KABAR and Case did on most of their older knives.

I looked at my large ~3 3/4" bone gunstocks, all have the masters just as this one does, that said, I too think it should have the master in front for a schatt/queen. 18 out of 20 have a shield but, two don't. I do remember seeing many Queen's with the Main in front and a left hand pen. About 75% of myrtle's knives are obvious reworks. 25 % ouf them are obvious restamps. I think that there were factory blades from Queen/Catt./Schatt and others that came on the collector market years ago. I think that this main may be one of them, it has not been 100% finished, but has nice swedging as does the pen blade. Queen: not marking the secondary blades and the easy to make 9 letter block "QUEEN CITY" stamp is a counterfeiters dream. I really like the bone on this knife. i'm not sure how the bone and blades came to meet on this knife, usually you have a knife with broken or worn blades that you would use, this bone seems like new. i'm not sure if that's filler on the front side rear end of the bone where it meets the bolster. thanks again, DC
