Is this a Case Sheild on this knife?

Is this a sheild that case used in the pre 1920's. I've never seen one like this.

It say's that it is a case Bradford era from pre 1920 but I have never seen a case knife with that knid of sheild

I wouldn't be too concerned about the shield, the older Case knives had "normal" shields, this one looks fine to me.

That shield dont look right on that knife to me Is that a 31 or 35 or...?

Almost looks like a Shrade or Camillus

If that knife is a pre 20's Case I would expect it to have no shield at all.

Someone please correct me...

Buckeyefan, I own four Case knives from before 1920 (i.e. the "Tested" era). All of them have shields. Most of the knives before the Tested era knives had "normal" shields. With the Tested era almost all of Case's knives had shields with the word "Case" on them. The Tested era knives seem to have only about five different styles, the Oval shield, the Bomb shield, the Diamond shield, the Bowtie shield and the Arrowhead shield with the Oval shield far predominating.

So this knife was made between 1914 and 1920 then?

When you say "normal shield" I think of the oval, thats why this shield made me say hmmm.

Any chance you could post some pics of your knives with this shield for us?

Agreed...Case Brothers used the crest shield on a regular basis.......

I have seen the crest shield on many Case knives I just never seen one in this pattern from the pre 20's era.

What I mean by "normal" shields is a shield without the "Case" name stamped on it. I believe that Case had many knives made for them by others cutleries in the early days and therefore their shields would just be whatever was provided by these makers.

I have a harness jack that has a shield very similar but not identical to this one, unfortunately I'm not much of a photographer. I would also say that, in general, it's very difficult to identify a manufacturer by a shield (unless their name is stamped on it) because the crest shield the bowtie shield, the bomb shield etc. are almost identical between manufacturers.

With regard to the question of the age of this knife, there's no way to venture a guess without knowing exactly what the tang stamp says, the knife does appear to be old. If this were a Case Tested knife (1920-40) then the shield would be very suspicious.

Thanks guy's for the info the tang stamp says WR Case & Son Bradford PA. that is why I was thinking this knife was pre 1920.
