What are the differences between the brands.

Post by Sure Shot Rick »

What are the differences between a Tidioute Scout 3 ¾” red diamond bone two blade 1095 steel knife and a Northfield Brand 3 3/4 “ red barn bone two blade in 1095 steel. There is a price difference With the Northfield being the more expensive. Is it just the work needed do the gigging the scales?

tidioute blades are all satin or crocus finish, northfield's are full on polish. there's a fair bit more labor involved in getting to a mirror finish than a satin. that does effect the price somewhat as well.

I believe the Tidioute brand is marketed as their economy brand and Northfield as their premium brand.Usually the Northfield will have a few extra bells and whistles,..ie. extra swedging on the blades,etc..The Great Eastern brand is their SS line.

I believe that they only put stag on the Northfield knives not the rest.
Which is kind of a bum. ::smirk::

When you say Northfields ar "full on polish" do you mean mirror finish or just smooth. I have a Northfield 73 Barn Board that I would consider satin rather than high polish. It's clean and smooth but a far cry from mirror.

They did not start the mirror finish on Northfield's until well after that one was made. It is also not a hard/fast rule as they still make some NF's with satin finish.

The Tidioute have plain satin 1095 blades and plain bolsters.

Northfield models have highly polished 1095 blades with ground swedges, and many also have fancy bolsters; slanted, threaded, pinched, or all three. Most models include a batch of burnt stag and/or genuine stag. They also can have premium handle materials like the primitive bone, mammoth ivory, pearl, and abalone.

The GEC models have the 440c blades. While they do not make as many models, they do still produce them. New stainless toothpicks have just been released.

These are not hard and fast rules. Periodically they made Northfield with satin finish, Tidioute with polished finish, Northfield with acrylic, etc. etc. But in general the Northfield are a little fancier and GEC is always stainless...
